A month passed with no reprieve in Lan Wangji"s increasing exhaustion, and then one morning he woke feeling decidedly ill.
He sat up in bed, almost startled by the force of the rolling wave of nausea pushing up the back of his throat. He swallowed convulsively, but it did no good. He scrambled from the bed, dashed to the door.
Lan Wangji barely made it to the veranda before he was violently ill over the railing. His stomach was empty already. He"d been too tired the night before to eat more than a few bites of rice under his brother"s fretful gaze and drink some tea. So, when he heaved again, it brought up nothing but vile burning acid which only caused him to retch harder.
"Wangji?" His brother"s voice came from within, surprising Lan Wangji when his brother had come into his Jingshi.
Lan Wangji"s arms shook, and he could not hold himself up over the railing. He sagged to the boards with a heavy thump.
"Wangji!" Lan Xichen skidded around the door, and held Lan Wangji to steady him. Realising that Lan Wangji was too ill to stand, he got them down on the floor, "Wangji, are you sick? What happened?"
Lan Wangji shook his head, unable to speak, still swallowing back against the urge to retch again. Lan Xichen smoothed his hair back from his face and pressed the inside of his wrist to his brother"s forehead to test for fever.
"You"re not feverish," he said in consternation. "Was it something you ate?" Lan Xichen asked in concern, "No, of course, it wasn"t something you ate. You"ve barely eaten anything in the last few days. Wangji, you"ve exhausted yourself to illness!"
But this wasn"t illness, Lan Wangji thought. Aside from the sudden bout of retching and the persistent nausea, he didn"t feel...sick, exactly. His hand crept unconsciously to his belly. Something inside him still didn"t feel...right.
He had been like this for the past few days now. He would feel vomiting and nauseating early in the morning. He has been very tired lately. He reasoned it as not getting sleep and having enough food but thinking of it now... He had not been really paying attention to himself and had been doing everything he could do to find Wei Wuxian. And this wasn"t simply fatigue, he knew. There was more into this.
Unconsciously, he spread his hand wide around his stomach.
And his eyes widened!
There... There was the slightest hint of softness, and the tiniest suggestion of fullness.
Impossible.
But still...
"Wangji?"
Lan Xichen had been talking, and Lan Wangji had not heard him. He sat pensively now, waiting for his brother to respond. Lan Wangji grabbed his hand and pressed it flat to his belly.
"Feel," he said.
"Wangji, what...?" Lan Xichen stared in confusion, his eyes growing darker and darker with concern over whatever was ailing his little brother, but then something sparked. His fingers twitched, and his jaw dropped as the pieces dropped into place and shocked comprehension slowly dawned. "Wangji, you can"t be...? You can"t possible believe that you"re..." His eyes were wide in confusion and astonishment.
Lan Wangji sank back to rest against the railing, both hands spread against his abdomen. He was a little dizzy with it. With this! It was completely ludicrous that he was considering the possibility, but it was also quite possibly completely real.
"But, Wangji, it"s impossible," Lan Xichen insisted again.
Lan Wangji smiled softly, remembering his beloved, and tears rolled down his cheek, "Wei Ying is the master of the impossible. He is someone who could attempt the impossible."
Lan Xichen hesitated, they still could not get their hopes up, "We will ask the healers for confirmation, I suppose, as any female would do who found herself in this condition."
Lan Wangji suddenly felt very, very tired. He did not want to go to the healers' now. All he wanted was, his husband, Wei Wuxian, beside him.
But Lan Xichen was stubborn. He would not let his bitter go on like this. So after a lot of convincing, Lan Wangji finally agreed.
They went to the healers pavilion almost immediately. The healers got to work quickly. Lan Xichen stayed by Lan Wangji's side the entire time, holding his hand reassuringly, which Lan Wangji appreciated very much.
"Second Master Lan, have you been feeling nauseous recently, or have you had any strange cravings?"
Lan Wangji thought for a little while before answering, "I've been feeling nauseous for a few days now. I thought it was something I ate so I didn't take much into consideration. I haven't had strange cravings, although I do find done food delicious while the other not."
"That could be considered strange by your standards wouldn't it?" The healer said teasing lightly.
When Lan Wangji didn't respond, the healer cleared his throat and smiled, "Second Master Lan, you're expecting a child."
Lan Wangji's eyes widened and his mouth hung open. The healer had successfully managed to render both the Zewu Jun and Hanguang-Jun speechless.
"Child?" Lan Wangji asked once he found his voice.
"Yes we checked with one of our talismans, it looks like you're carrying a baby." The healer replied.
Lan Xichen felt Lan Wangji's hand tighten around his. When Lan Xichen turns to face those golden eyes of his brother's, he was taken back at how wet and watery they are. Lan Wangji was crying.
"Wangji, this is good, don"t cry."
Lan Wangji took his brother's hand and brought it to his chest, holding it tight and crying his heart out.
"Brother..."
"It's ok, Wangji, please don't cry." Lan Xichen hugged his little brother for the first time in ages.
"I... I need Wei Ying..."
Lan Xichen tried to blink away his tears and replied as calm as he could, "Young Master Wei will not let you go though this alone. He will come. Come back to you."
"It's been a... Month..." Lan Wangji sobbed harder.
"It has just been a month. Don't lose hope. Young Master Wei will surely come back to you, alive."
Hearing the word, 'alive' made Lan Wangji sob even more harder. He clutched his robes around his abdomen and looked down at his belly which now held a life within.
Tears of joy rolled down his cheek and he couldn't help but smile despite his sadness.
Wei Wuxian and he.... Were going to be parents!
Although gossiping was forbidden in Cloud Recesses, somehow, news of Lan Wangji crying tears of Joy spread throughout the sect the following day.
