9: Stray Kitty

ETHAN WAS WALKING BACK from the Carpenter sisters (and Quinn's) apartment, taking the long route so he could stay in the windy weather a little longer.

As he was walking he noticed a box on the side of the street that said "Free".

He stares at it, about to lift the lid when instead something inside it lifts it for him. A little fuzzy head pokes out. It's paws are at the edge of the box and green eyes meet brown.

Ethan slowly lifts up the lid more to see if there's any other kittens inside and there aren't.

The green eyed cat rubs its face against his hand and Ethan begins to pet the small creature.

"A female" He whispers to himself when the cat rolled over on its back and showed its stomach. He couldn't just leave her here so he grabs the box from the concrete ground gently and heads back to his dorm. He grabs the keys from his pocket and unlocks the door, trying not to be loud since Chad had said he would be taking a nap as a stress reliever from school.

Ethan sets the box on the ground and lifts the lid. The cat peeks out and looks around, before ducking back inside.

"Come on out little buddy, it's okay," Ethan coos, sitting down next to the box trying to show the cat that he'll be patient with her and that he isn't going anyways.

The cat pokes out of the box again, looking around and staring for a little bit at Ethan, and then deciding that it's okay to come out. She jumps out of the box and walks towards Ethan and rubs her head against his knee and he scratches her back. She starts purring softly and jumping into his lap and lying down. The air outside was freezing, so Ethan doesn't blame her for immediately trying to find warmth.

"Why do you have a cat?" Chad asks as he's standing in their bedroom doorway. Ethan  jumps when he speaks, which causes the cat to panic and run back into the box. He looks at Chad with a guilty expression.

"She was on the side of the street, so I grabbed her" Ethan responds while trying to get the cat to come back out again.

"Uh-huh. And you decided to bring it inside even though it could be carrying fleas? And ignoring the 'no pets' policy?" Chad questions with his arms crossed, walking closer.

"It was freezing outside!" Ethan states as the cat finally comes back out of the box.

Chad sighs before squatting down next to Ethan.

"Are you going to take care of it?" Chad asks, looking between the cat and his boyfriend.

"Her. And yes, I will take care of her," he says as he picks up the cat and cuddles her, and she immediately rubs against him. Chad smiles at the sight, and stands up to grab some food and water for her.

"She must be starving, who knows how long she was in that box," he says while filling a bowl of water and looks around for something to feed her.

"I could go and get some cat food, I don't know what we have here that she can have," Ethan suggests. Chad smiles at him and hands him the bowl of water. He puts it and the cat down, and she starts drinking from it.

"You should name her first," Chad mentions.

Ethan thought about it for a second, "How about...butters?".

"Of course you'd choose a name like butters" Chad rolled his eyes. "it doesn't fit her. How about..Marley?" Chad suggested.

"I like it." Ethan smiles. "Welcome to the family, Marley" Ethan pets her head and she purrs against him.
