"I can't believe you are getting married." Caroline said as she sat on my bed next to me.
I put on a forced smile. "Yeah, exciting."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. Just nerves, I guess."
"Well, everything is going to be perfect."
"Yeah, I know."
"Now, come on. Let's get you dressed."
Caroline tugged on my hand and led me into a different room. Caroline did my hair and makeup and I watched out the window as the rain continued to pour down. But I wasn't going to let any rain put a damper on my mood. I was excited, sort of. I was still a little sad over what happened with Joe. I would get over it, eventually. I just needed some time. But today was going to be good. I was going to be marrying Casey. We were going to be going on our honeymoon to Paris. Everything would be perfect. Caroline got done with everything and I went downstairs to get in the car that Caroline would drive us in to take us to the Church. Everyone else had already left before us and so now it was time for us to leave. Caroline and I huddled under an umbrella as we ran to the car. The rain pounded against the windshield as we pulled out of the driveway. Caroline got on the interstate as she drove us to our destination. The rain started to get worse as we drove. So bad that it was hard to even see. Then, out of nowhere, I saw the bright lights of a semi heading right for us.
"Caroline! Watch out!"
Caroline swerved the wheel but the semi still hit us. The impact caused the car to spin and the semi driver tried to hit the brakes. The rain was too hard to stop on and the truck pushed us through the guardrail. The car flipped and we smashed into a tree. I tried to focus on the people running towards our car but it was blurry and then I went unconscious. But before my vision went black, there was a man. A man that looked worried. A man that looked like Joe.
I woke up to the beeping sounds of a pulse monitor. I could only assume that I was in the hospital. I looked around and to my surprise, I saw Joe sitting and reading a book.
"Joe?"
He looked up and I had never seen him so happy as he looked at me.
"Hey. You're awake. Let me go and get the doctor."
He left the room and I looked around the rest of the room. Where was Caroline or the rest of my family and friends? Why was Joe here? Was Caroline ok? The doctor walked in and looked everything over and asked me how I was feeling. I told him I was sore but I would be ok. He told me he would tell a nurse to bring some pain medication and then left the room. Joe sat back down in his seat.
"Joe?"
"Yeah?"
"What happened? Why are you here?"
"A semi hit you and you hit into a tree. You're lucky to be alive. I was actually headed to your house to say goodbye when I saw the accident happen. I rushed over to help the people in the car and when I saw it was you...I pulled you out as quickly as I could."
"Where is everyone? Caroline, my fiancée, my parents?"
"They aren't here yet. You had to be taken into surgery and that was when I called them. The rain is really bad out there. They said they would come once the rain let up."
He didn't say anything more and went back to his book.
"What about Caroline?"
"Hm?"
"Caroline. Where is Caroline? Is she in surgery? Is she in a different room? Can I see her?"
He looked down like he didn't want to say. I knew exactly what that meant. Tears started to stream down my face as I looked out the window at the pouring rain.
"The impact...was really bad. I tried to...I tried to pull her out but when I did, she was already gone. She died upon impact with the tree. If I could have saved her, I would..."
"It's alright. I understand."
I cried out like I never had before and I felt Joe sit next to me. He wrapped his arms around me and I never wanted him to let go. Because if he did, I might fall apart.
