~ Three Years Later ~
"Now, Carol, you don't want your opponent to be able to grab your leg here so this part is important..."
I watched as Carol was practicing with Jon in the ring. Carol was now ten and asked if she could try wrestling. I was so happy as I watched her get down the moves so easily.
"She is a natural."
Colby said as he sat down next to me and watched as Carol was able to get Jon into a submission. Jon laughed as he tapped out.
"Yep, just like her father."
Colby smiled as we continued to watch Carol. Colby had moved to Ohio. He just wasn't happy anymore at his house. He went back to wrestling and got injured once again and the doctors finally told him to hang up his boots. Colby was now helping out at the gym and he was loving it. WWE ended up endorsing the gym which got people talking and actually want to come here. Finally, money started rolling in and I so happy to say that there were no worries of where the next paycheck was coming from. I ended up sending Carol to a private school like I wanted. She was so happy there. And she looked happy to be wrestling too. I was so glad to see her happy once again.
"Does she still miss him?"
"Every day."
Colby put an arm around me. "She is going to be ok, you know?"
"I know. It has just been hard on her and on me."
Carol danced in the ring excitedly. "Mom? Did you see that? Did you see that? I beat uncle Jon."
Jon smirked. "Oh yeah? You think you have beaten me? You're no match for my height, shorty."
Jon picked up Carol and spun her around. I heard her laugh which was something I hadn't heard in a long time. I was happy to hear it.
"Can I go on without you guys?"
I nodded and Carol ran up through the graveyard. Colby followed after her. He was such a great guy to Carol. He was there for her now. He still hadn't found the person he wanted to be with and have kids with but I could see that he loved Carol like a father and I was happy that he was in her life. She needed someone there for her.
"I can see it on your face." Jon told me.
"What?"
"That you're worried about her."
"I'm not."
"You can't fool me."
I sighed. "I worry that this is going to ruin her life."
"It isn't. She is going to be fine, I promise."
"I love it when you come down here. Why don't you come down here more often?"
"You know, I have my own life."
Jon had gotten a job with a local wrestling company near his house in Nevada. He started having kids soon after he quit wrestling and his wife would be giving birth to twins soon. I was so happy for him. He was sad the day they told him that he had to quit wrestling. He hadn't gotten a really bad shoulder injury and the doctors told him he had to stop wrestling every night like he was. WWE told him that this meant his time with the company had to end, just like it did with every wrestler. He, of course, took that news and decided that even though he couldn't wrestle every night, he would train others to wrestle instead. He was really good at it too.
"Yeah, I know. Carol just loves it when you come down here."
"I know she does but she has Colby here. And she has you."
"Yeah, I know."
We walked in silence as we made our way towards the gravestone. Carol was sitting in front of it, placing down flowers. I looked at it and tried to stop myself from crying. I replaced new flowers with the old ones and Carol came over to me.
"Don't cry, mom. A better place, right?"
I nodded. "Yes, honey. A better place."
I put my hand on the stone. Carol, Jon and Colby left me alone for a while.
"Hi, it's me. It's been a while. Carol has grown up so fast. She loves to wrestle and she is spontaneous. And she is so smart. Making straight A's. I miss you so bad, you know? I guess that will never change, will it? No matter how much time passes, I'll always miss you. And I know that we both made mistakes but we were best friends, weren't we? I just miss you so bad. Well, that is all I really have to say for now. Love you. Goodbye."
I stood up and wiped away my tears. I felt arms come around me. I knew who the arms belonged too and pulled the person close to me.
"Hi."
"Hey."
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah. It's just hard coming here, you know?"
"I know."
He kissed my cheek and took my hand.
"Was your flight ok?"
"It was perfect."
"Sorry that I couldn't meet you at the airport."
"It's ok. I knew you had this today."
"Did you see Carol?"
"Yeah."
"She has missed having you home."
"I know she has."
He kissed me and I was happy he was home too. He pulled back and smiled.
"Joe! Come on! The game is coming on in a little while. Stop making out with your wife!" Colby yelled.
Joe shook his head. "The boys are calling."
"Aren't they always?"
He laughed. "I'll see you later, ok?"
I nodded. I was so happy to have him back home. Joe had taken a job with the WWE once again. He wanted a job with the WWE and so they told him that they wanted him on the road. He got a job as a commentator and he was really great at. Carol missed having him home but he made sure that WWE gave him a light schedule so that he could be home a lot more than when he was wrestling. Carol always missed him when he was away. Luckily, WWE was giving him two weeks off so he would be home with us for now.
"Mom, come on! Let's go!"
I looked back at Caroline's grave and smiled. I was happy again. My life wasn't perfect, far from it. But it was my little perfect imperfect world. And that was good enough for me. I ran down to the car and drove away from the graveyard, finally feeling happy and and free.
