Chanel's Pov
"But you have to promise me you will do good and you will live a full life, yes?" Jen asked me as she held me by my shoulders ready to shake some sense into me. "Yes I promise." I told her. She pulled me in and hugged me tight as I laughed. "You are a smart girl Chanel, but you are young and under twenty one. Don't forget that and understand that you will grow, don't rush it. You're a child." I nodded my head even though in my head I know I've seen too much to still be a child. "I love you, beautiful, safe travels." She said leaving me with a kiss on my forehead.
As I walked out that gas station for the last time I felt a part of me stay inside. Before my body could react my phone rang. It was Valentina so I answered immediately. "He left me." She said, deadly. "He left but I'm keeping the baby." My steps were slow as I heard those words. "I'm still leaving Valentina." Silence ran through the phone for a while before she sighed. "Finish school, go to college and get a career. Make something out of myself even though it will be harder with a child. Right?" She asked, quoting me. I could tell my words ran through her head for a while.
"I called because I wanted to tell you I'm staying at the cabin and I will finish my studies." My heart jumped as I listened to her and crossed the street. "I want you to leave New York, and I'd like you to never look back. I love you and I am so incredibly proud of how far you have gotten and I'm glad you've found someone to walk by. Chanel, your dad and brother would be so incredibly proud and I know my parents are proud too. Leave, be happy, but call once a day everyday for the rest of our lives please." She said, which left me aching in my skin. Making me want to run and stay in this hole I've dug myself in. But I know no one would forgive me if I did.
"I love you Valentina." I told her as I entered Ruby's apartment complex and went up the stairs. "I love you just as much." Once I hung up with her I shook my head and knocked on Ruby's door. "It's me Ruby." I called out. The door swung open immediately and she stood with a smile. I walked in and she shut the door behind me. I looked around and the apartment was clean. Not clean as in freshly mopped but clean as in no drugs laying around nor money next to them. "Scared you'll be the one to break my sobriety?" I asked, turning around. She shrugged. "I'll take no chances." She said walking to me. "You tried to get me to drink at that party." I said pointing to my nose piercing. "Drinking isn't the same as drugs." She chuckled.
She hugged me and held the back of my head like I was a crying child in her arms. And in seconds I was. I put my arms under hers and rested my hands on her shoulders and cried. I weeped and sobbed however you'd want to put it, I broke. Ruby was my weakness, she held a soft spot in my heart. Her hands felt like armor around me like I could break. "I'll never say goodbye to you Chanel." Her voice broke as she told me. "Everything I know, I'm leaving behind." I told her.
"No." She said simply. She pulled away and looked at me with her eyes red. "You are leaving behind the foundation you've built to go and get support beams." I chuckled through my tears as she talked to me like a book. "Deep down I know you're excited to leave, so leave. If you're worried about me I'll be fine and I'll come to see your name in lights one day." She smiled as a tear fell down her face which she wiped away quickly.
I pulled her back in and she swayed me side to side. "I love you beautiful." She moved and wiped her face again as she walked in the kitchen. I followed her lifted my shirt to wipe my face but it was no use really because my eyes kept watering up. She clears her throat and took a seat on the counter. I stood in front of her and crossed my arms. "Tell me about Landon, go ahead." I looked around and acted confused as I pulled my necklace out of my shirt. "There's nothing to say, though he is waiting for me back at home."
She let out a loud gasp as she leaned in. "You lucky son of a bitch." She said looking at the ring that hung around my neck. Landon was in fact waiting for me. I was supposed to go see Jen and come right back but I had to see Ruby first. Let out my final years with her. Landon and I stayed up all night packing the house and throwing away anything unneeded. "I only came to say I love you." I told her. "So, I love you Ruby." She leaned down and kissed my forehead. "I love you too beautiful."
After saying goodbye and a few more tears with Ruby I found myself standing in front of the house. I knew if I opened it, this would be the last time I entered it. The last time I'd call out to Landon. When I opened the door, our suitcases sat by the front door and Landon came running. His smile was so big and bright as he walked up to me. "Are you ready?" He asked, handing me a jacket. "Let's get out of here, Bugs."
As he ordered a Uber I put all our luggage outside on the sidewalk and he locked the door for the last time. The car got here fast and when we put all our stuff away in the trunk, we sat by one another and he looked down at me. "Is it too late to mention I have a fear of flying?" I shook my head and laughed before laying my head on his shoulder.
The airport was busy at this time of night but we started to board the plane after only an hour of being there. I held his hand as I watched him slowly panic when the plane lifted. "I thought you were joking." I smiled. He flashed a fake smile and squeezed my hand. I grabbed his face and he looked at me. "Just look at me, it's all okay. I promise." I placed a gentle kiss on his forehead and he took a deep breath as the plane settled in the sky. I looked out the window and almost felt bad for not saying goodbye to my childhood home. I definitely felt bad for not seeing Valentina in person. I think Ruby, Valentina and Charlotte will be the ones I miss the most.
I held my necklace and shut the blinds of the window. I leaned back and looked over at him though he was already looking. In this moment I felt so loved by not only him but everyone else around me. I was going into this with a crew of people I didn't realize I had. In his green eyes I saw a glimpse of our future and I couldn't be more grateful. His eyes were my personal mirror that only reflected perfection. "I love you." I told him.
