There was silence in the library for a second. It was pitch black because the power had gone out. Part of the equally strange situation was that Thia and Kai were lying on the floor, while a wave of panic spread through the guests in the living room. Questioning voices and loud murmurs could be heard through the closed door.
"U-our chemistry has always been strange," Thia murmured softly, lying under her neighbor, glad that through the darkness he could not see how red her face was.
For that, their hearts were treacherous.
Kai pulled back on the door frame, but had no idea where he was or where to put his hand so it wouldn't touch any wrong places. He turned his head back and forth, but he couldn't see a thing. "Was that a power outage?" he hissed, trying to distract from the chemistry that was clearly evident between them.
Thia nodded, but remembered that Kai couldn't see it and whispered, "Yes. But that usually doesn't even happen during thunderstorms."
Therefore, the thought that they had caused this power outage was totally irrationally buzzing around in her head. And at that, her heart beat up to her throat, causing Thia to quickly withdraw her hand.
The soft rustling sound was overheard by her excitement.
"Damn, your dad didn't teach me how to turn the power back on," he cursed softly, because it also meant that the mansion's gate was locked. So they were stuck here, not only the two of them, but all the guests as well. Awkwardly, Kai pulled himself up by the wood of the bookshelf. "Did you know about this door?" he then asked quietly, but he couldn't even get to his feet properly before a rumbling sound rushed towards the two teenagers and Kai was pushed aside by an unexpected force. He could hear the breathing of unknown people and stumbled in shock over Thia's feet, which were still on the ground.
The girl gave a short cry this time, although she did not see the people. An unknown presence pressed her leg against her shoulder and she instinctively pulled her arms up to protect her head.
The darkness made it difficult for them to orient themselves, and as panicked footsteps rushed toward the stairs, a paralyzing fear overcame them. "What was that?" whispered Kai to her, fumbling frantically with his pants pocket when he remembered he was carrying a lighter. With a cracking sound, he lit a small flame, illuminating a tiny area.
"Burglars, maybe?" the 18-year-old guessed in a shrill voice, wincing as Kai's face lit up an eerie orange. The color danced across his face, casting soft shadows that accentuated his prominent features. His eyes sparkled in the dim glow of the fire, while his brow furrowed slightly. "S-should we go after them? Or call the police? They can't get out of here, what if they're dangerous ...-" a moment later Thia gasped as another thought crossed her mind, "but my father would know about it!"
Her words were lost in the darkness as the crackle of the fire and the murmur of her fears pierced the silence.
Kai shook his head vigorously as the significance of the situation hit him. It became clear to him that not only Thia, but also he would suffer the consequences. After all, he had promised to look after her, and now she had thrown an unexpected party, gotten involved with a boy, and discovered a secret door in the villa.
