July, 2019:

"Em, what's going on?" JJ asked as we each took our respective seats in the conference room.

"This is Jane Tyler. She's killed 3 women in the past two months in New York and she's currently holding one hostage. The hostage also so happens to be an undercover agent who the beauru is insistent gets home safely."

"What does this have to do with my time in the city?" I furrowed my brows as Penelope passed me a file.

"Y/n," Emily stated. "The agent that she has is Audrey Williams."

"Oh," was all I could seem to say, as I looked down and looked through the pages of the file.

"What was the COD?" Luke asked trying to maintain some normalcy for this case.

"Each victim had a gunshot wound to the head, and a different token placed where their body was found," Emily replied.

"For Whitney Heart, a napkin with a lipstick stain was on it was found with her body. For Lauren Bridgers, a set of handcuffs and a syringe was with her body. And finally for Bella Michales, a gold roller skate keychain," Garcia explained, cueing each photo of their respective items on the screen. Spencer squinted his eyes suspiciously at the board, the gears in his head obviously turning. It's harder to read him now then it used to be even now I can tell something is wrong. There's something he's hiding.

"Is it just me or do these victims look similar to y/n?" Tara asked, squinting at the photos in the file.

"No," Spencer spoke quickly. "They don't. Must just be a coincidence." He didn't look up from where he was looking at his own file and he suddenly seemed on edge.

"Local PD expects us to be able to negotiate with the unsub and be able to recover the hostage alive."

"Wheels up in 30," Emily stated, before turning to me specifically. "I need to see you in my office now."

We left the room and walked down the walkway to her office. She turned around shutting her door then sat down at her desk. It felt like yesterday and yet a whole lifetime ago that I was sitting in the same spot getting interviewed.

"If this is about me and Spencer-"

"Y/n, that's not what I wanted to speak to you about."

"Oh."

"The beauru is hesitant to put you on this case. They think Jane Tyler is killing these people and kidnapping Audrey to draw you there."

"That doesn't make any sense though. I don't know any of the dead women, don't know what any of the objects mean and I don't even know Jane Tyler."

"That's what I told them, but they're very persistent," she sighed, looking at me sternly. "But thankfully, I'm more stubborn. You're going to be on this case, but you have to be careful. No going off on your own for this one. Understand."

"Yes, ma'am," I responded, exiting the office.

The plane ride to New York was fairly calm. Spencer sat in a separate corner, quieter than usual. I wanted to ask what was going on but we hadn't clearly discussed the boundaries of our relationship and how we'd navigate work so I left it alone.
