CHAPTER SEVEN
Until now, Stella did not know of a reason to have a pregnancy test kit in her house since her mind was never bent on having a child. Though she has been contemplating the idea for two weeks after she realized her period was late, she made up her mind to get one only after she completed the task at hand.
She was yet to mention the possibility of her new situation to her husband but his indifference made it easier to keep her suspicions to herself. Although, she's been browsing the internet on early symptoms and signs of pregnancy, she was yet to take the final test to confirm. She hasn't experienced any of these signs but she knew not to be in a haste as the experience would be different for everyone. The moment she took the confirmatory test, she would tell him and maybe her mother too.
Out of the blues, her husband seemed to be showing interest in kids. More than twice in the last two weeks, he brought up the topic in their conversation. Yes, it made her happy to learn that he'd also regretted their decision to do nothing about when they would start giving birth. His sudden enthusiasm on the subject was going to make it even easier for her when she broke the news to him.
Even in the way he made love to her nowadays spoke volumes about his change of heart. He hasn't admitted it to her yet, she wasn't going to say anything either. Her mind was made up about her visit to the doctor tomorrow. The burden of having to meet up with the deadlines for her clients has been lifted off her shoulder, so, now it would be taking care of her mind and body. Just maybe, her unborn baby too.
..........
"I would like to do a scan," she said to one of the female attendants at the reception.
"Okay, ma. Fill your details inside the form in front of you," the lady instructed.
While she did that, another woman slid onto the vacant chair besides hers. She looked, a tall dark pregnant woman.
"Achom ime scan," the pregnant woman started. "I hope it will show the gender of my baby?" she asked.
"Ma, ask the doctor in the course of the scan," the attendant replied.
Stella temporarily forgot her issues and the reason she wanted to have a scan as she stared at the pregnant woman. Her head filled with thoughts on how long it would take until she got to this stage too. She couldn't wait to show off her baby bump in beautiful maternity dresses that'd surely be designed by her.
"Hello! Ma," the attendant called out to her.
"Oh, sorry," she apologized and handed over her form.
"It's four thousand naira." She was told. Searching through her large black Fendi bag, she counted the amount and handed it over.
As soon as they finished attending to her, she was instructed to drink enough water to enable the bladder fill up faster while she waited for it to get to her turn. She watched her surrounding, noting that more pregnant women came in for one issue or another. There were also women who came carrying their new-born babies or toddlers. Despite how shabby very few of these women dressed, she knew that nothing could beat the joy of the young human being in their arms or belly.
'Dear God, please let this be my condition one of these days.' She pled.
Her name was called and she went in for her turn. After the usual pleasantries, she undressed, laid on the roller bed and awaited the next instruction.
"Madam, why have you come for this scan?" the man attending to her inquired.
Aghast at his question, she didn't understand why he felt she should tell him. Couldn't he tell from the screen? He was already rolling the probe over her bare stomach, does it mean he was seeing nothing out of the ordinary?
