CHAPTER EIGHT
As Stella drove to aunt Jecinta's house for the child dedication ceremony, Cynthia couldn't keep her mouth from ranting and sharing gist of what happened at their stay in Victoria Island during her anniversary with Emeka. Her gist helped to keep Stella's thoughts from straying to the dark places. Today would be exactly two weeks since her life was thrown into shambles.
She knew it would end up like this, somehow she had the insight that she was not going to like what she would find out. Nevertheless, the test was a necessary requirement in order to forge ahead with her treatments; according to Dr Raymond. Having seen the results of both the Hormonal assay in addition to the cervical microscopy and culture tests, he had assured her that she was okay to go but encouraged her to go for the transvaginal scan.
She'd surprisingly overcame her fear of the long probe damaging her insides and carried on with the scan. She had expected to hear that everything was okay, on the contrary, the doctor's diagnosis had not corresponded.
"From what I can see on the screen, you have PCOS," he'd related while offering her a tissue to clean up.
"What is that?"
"Polycystic Ovary Syndrome."
"Is it responsible for the irregular menstrual flow?"
"Yes, it is. But it is not a difficult problem, I'm sure your gynaecologist will explain more." He'd told her.
When she took the report back to Raymond, he'd said the same thing.
"Does this mean I'll never get pregnant?"
"You might take in by chance, however, PCOS is known to be responsible for about fifty percent miscarriages in first trimester. Plus, it's better to observe on how frequently it occurs before it'll be safe to have you conceive."
That was like the worst news she's heard in her entire life. She was yet to tell anyone else about it.
"We're here finally. You're a slowpoke when it comes to driving, I almost started thinking we would arrive once the ceremony is over," Cynthia remarked at her cousin's newly acquired driving skills.
"You're welcome. Make sure to teach me how it's done once you get your own car." Stella retorted. She parked the KIA by the fence closest to their aunt's compound.
The music from the compound reverberated through the quiet street. Stella and her cousin navigated their way through the active crowd. She didn't want to be here but her mother insisted, stating that celebrating others good fortune would quicken hers.
"Oh, Stella my dear, how are you?" aunt Jecinta said once both ladies came to greet her.
"I'm fine, ma. How's Bisola and the baby?" Stella said out of courtesy.
"They're doing very well. I think they're still taking photos inside, you can join in." she admonished. "For memories sake."
This was a good idea since she could in this way prove to her mom that she attended the ceremony and also congratulated the hosts rather than sulking at a corner.
She couldn't help the nostalgic emotions that surfaced as she watched her distant sister in-law full of smiles while she and her new baby girl were being admired by the guests. When would she experience something like this?
Judging by looks, Bisola appeared to have added some baby weight as the last time she saw the couple was at their wedding reception, early last year. Now, a year and two months later, they're celebrating the dedication of their first daughter. She mentally calculated the gestation period; Bisola definitely took in a month or two after her wedding.
