I went home that night, did my homework, and asked Dad if we could go to the horse farm.
"Dad, can we please go to the horse farm?" I asked with puppy eyes.
"Have you done your homework?" Dad replied without looking up.
"Yes," I answered.
"Okay then, I guess we can go," Dad said. Yes! I thought.
Ten minutes later, we arrive at Dad's horse farm. Dad helped me get Nellie ready to ride.
"Hey, Dad?"
"Mmm-hmm?"
"Do you think I'll be able to ride by myself in about a month?" I asked.
"Is there something you're wanting, sweet pea?"
"Not necessarily..." I said.
"Well, you could be riding by yourself in a month if you work hard enough," Dad said. I hopped on Nellie, (now that I knew how) and Dad led me around the pasture. Feeling the wind in my hair, I felt awesome. After a while of doing that, Dad said, "Do you want to ride by yourself?"
"Yes!" I said.
"Alright, you're going to hold Nellie's reins, and gently kick her in the side to let her know she's supposed to start moving. If you want her to go a little faster, pick up her reins and then drop them back down. Okay, here. You try." He explained. I gently kicked Nellie and she started slowly walking. I felt accomplished from making a horse walk by myself. Nellie and I trotted around the pasture for some time, then Dad called me in to put Nellie away and go home. Brushing Nellie's pretty red mane, I thought, 'with Dad's and Olivia's help, I have a chance to win the horse competition!' Sitting in the car on the way home, Dad asked,
"So why do you really need to be able to ride a horse in a month?"
"Well, there is a horse competition I've heard about... And already signed up for..." I replied.
"Oh, is that so?" Dad replied with a smile.
