Sabrina
I have been to Nicolette's house countless times and it's like I could call the place home. Nevertheless, I would not just pop in front of her house without a text or a phone call.
Manners, something crucial in Asian culture to show the sound teachings of the parents.
I left Nicolette's house after 2 hours and the evening Sun still shone relentlessly in the white-blue sky. As soon as I stepped out of the door, I could feel my sweat gland being activated and the heat rose from the burning pavement.
I took a few steps down the street before turning my head towards Nicolette's house.
This is the first time I kept a secret away from Nicolette and I could not forgive myself for that.
We might not be some sort of New York Gossip Girls discussing the school tea, but we tell each other everything about our personal life. Especially breaking news like dating Brent Kotsky.
There were a lot of things going on in the past that made Nicolette worried about me and I did not want her to experience those distress again.
I decided to suppress my feelings and scrolled through my social media while waiting for the bus to arrive.
I rarely wear dresses because it was not my style. This time, I wanted to impress Brent primarily on our first real date. By the time I got changed into a short puff sleeve black dress and put on my favourite crescent moon necklace, I received another call from Brent.
Oh, shoot. I forgot to call him back just now.
I quickly swiped to the green button and answered, "Hey, Brent!"
"Hey, Riri! I called you just now but you did not pick it up. Is everything alright?" He sounded concerned from the other side of the phone.
"I was at Nicolette's just now, sorry."
"Oh, don't be. I'll pick you up at 7 and see ya for our dinner date babe!" His voice changed and this time filled with excitement."You too," I replied before hanging up.
I hugged my phone tightly close to my heart. I just get those butterfly feeling whenever I talked to Brent and blood would flow so close to the surface of my skin and make me look like a tomato.
7.15 pm. I tried to convince myself that he was just stuck in rush hour traffic or he had problems with the directions since this was his first time driving up to my house. He was always on time for any project meetings and I was positively sure he was not late on purpose.
3 calls that went straight into voicemails later, I started to worry that Brent got into some sort of unforeseeable accident. I paced around my room anxiously trying to not overthink.
Just as I was about to take the courage and ring his parents, he gave me their numbers because he thought it would be useful during an emergency, which I could say moments like this, someone rang the doorbell.
I scurried down the stairs and reached for the door.
"Surprise, Riri!" Brent extended his arms, holding a bouquet of red roses with a wide smile on his face. "Thank you, babe. That's so sweet of you." I carefully accepted the flowers with both hands and gestured for him to enter.
"I apologise for being 15 minutes late. I went to get flowers and the traffic sucks," he explained without waiting for me to ask. "Not gonna lie, I was so prepared to call your parents," I spoke with a little laugh. "Oh, don't do that. My parents are gonna spank me right up in the ass knowing I did not treat my date right," he joked.
