A swarm in the way

A large fist made of steel smashed through the rubble, allowing a figure to climb out of the hole. He had jet black hair and wore a tattered blue coat that he possessed since he was young.

His name is Cody Miles but at the same time he was not. Right now his Clouded eyes stared at the direction of the Shelter, the home of thousands of refugees and the only safe place for hundreds of miles from the Murderous machines that wander in search of Their prey.

"I must Take Master Cody there..." He spoke in a rasp voice...

~~~
Two days had passed since our group split up... and I am starting to feel frustrated.
Our original objective was to find Cody and bring him back but thanks to our Encounter with the Titan Class, we had no choice but deviate from our original plan.
I opted to join Riley's group so I could Remain longer in the surface despite the slim chance of finding Cody on our way towards the shelter.
Miles of Scorched earth and dust clouds dominated our path after we entered the southern waste, Cluttered by the remnants of A civilization that we once Had.
We had to put down a few Scrap guardians idling around the area waiting for unprepared Scavengers wandering this part of the waste. Our hover bikes made our trip a lot more bearable and less dangerous since wandering on foot was considered foolish in the surface.
There was only a few miles left before we could reach our destination, aside from the occasional scout bots that wander aimlessly in our path It was a relatively peaceful trip in compared to the missions they ran a few months back.
"hey Wiggins... Slow down a bit you're breaking formation." A feminine voice scolded me on the Radio breaking me out of my reverie.
"Sorry Shizu..." I drawled which made her sigh and I laughed at that.
Kirigaya Shizu One of the few survivors of the Japan Incident that took countless lives and cost them their homeland. I should know... since I was there at that time...
I still could remember how we sunk into despair when those huge black stakes started plummeting from the sky after capturing the enemy Head quarters. It was a grim reminder that The machines had the upper hand despite our efforts to win this losing war.
"Do you think We'd see Cody there?" Shizu said through our comms.
"I am not sure shizu all we can do is wait and see." Riley answered which unnerved me.
"Wait and see? You got to be kidding me Riley." I snorted which made him wince.
"Vi don't get you're hopes up for all we know he might have gone the other direction."
"Riley put a li-"
"Incoming drones!!!." Shizu cut me off.
A swarm of Bee shaped drones flew towards us brandishing stingers crackling deadly plasma.
"Shizu do you have a few EMP grenades?" Riley asked.
"Yeah I Got a few." She replied.
"Throw it at them Vi will cover you."
"Roger."
I revved my engine and broke out of formation and quickly passed shizu who was prepping an EMP grenade. It was an easy task of pressing the sequence code so it wouldn't be hacked by low Tier Infiltrator bots but pressing the sequence code with one hand while driving is hard so I need to buy her some time.
I pressed a switch right next to my thumb unlocking my weapon compartment and quickly drew a glock 423 "smart gun" a recoilless low caliber fully automatic handgun with extended mags which house twenty four rounds.
"Time to party." I smirked and quickly fire in burst at the drones that quickly assumed I am threat and began to prioritized me than the others.
I leaned to the right to evade a stinger and unleashed a hail of tracer bullets which seek chinks in their armor but the drones are equipped with heavier and sturdier armor than the standard ones.
"Tsk."
If only I could use my death adder but I need to use it at point blank to be affective.
"Shizu, Riley done with you're liitle preparation? I am getting swarmed here." I complained through the comms while evading the machines that wanted to impale me.
"Get out of there Vi you don't want to get caught by the EMP."
"Easy for you to say." I muttered as I flick another switch that activated the booster installed in my bike.
"Eat dust."
I felt myself being launch forward along with my bike as I flew out of the storm of drones smacking a few of them with my gun.
A powerful explosion followed once I landed safely a few distance away clear from the blast zone.
"Shizu wasn't that little over kill?" I said through our comms.
"Did you mean packing together three emp grenades in a bundle?.. Yeah now that I think About it was over kill." She chuckled.
"Better than too much than too little..." Riley cut in. "... And good job Vi."
I snorted "I was just doing my role no need to praise me."
He chuckled. "Let's get back to our objective then... If luck is with us today We would reach the shelter in three hours."
"Let's go then." Shizu cheered which made me smirk before revving my hover bike and joined them back into the weathered road.
Unbeknownst to us... our luck was a little to damn high...
