"Well, I'm honored to be your last-resort family friend." Evan said in a half-sarcastic tone.
Jared rolled his eyes and said nothing.
The two sat in silence. Jared felt perfectly comfortable, but Evan felt the need to break the silence.
"My dad, he, uh... He flew up from Colorado, last week. He, um... Yeah, he came up and he was really really nice and I had no clue what was up with that and I asked him, uh, when he left. I asked him why he was in such a- a good mood and he just looked at me and, in all seriousness, said, 'Evan, I'm going to have a son. My first.' So I guess apparently Theresa is pregnant but that's not the point of the story, the point is that he doesn't th-think of me as his son and it kind of really hurts and I just- I don't know why I'm telling this to you, I just wish... I just had to spill to someone, I, I guess. We used to be so close. I, um, my deeper instincts say that I should trust you? Though, who knows why that is."
Jared felt slight sympathy for Evan. He felt bad that Evan had gone through that. And he almost felt bad that Evan was apologetic for opening up.
"That sucks, dude."
"It sucks, sure, but what can I do about it?"
"Nothing, really."
Evan sighed. "Yeah, I know."
"Still don't understand why you told me all of this."
"Because we used to be close."
