She is talking to Joss from the mouthpiece of her generic headphones connected to her phone that is already in her handbag because the air buds that are the craze nowadays are a nightmare for an anxious and forgetful person like her.
"Are you sure you don't want to wait for me? I could accompany you to the university when I get home. It's my last shift for the week anyway," Joss glanced at his watch while leaning back against the door of a cubicle in the men's restroom. He is on his final break before clocking out later.
"No, I can manage. You need your rest and I want to be able to do things on my own," Alice tried to control the slight trembling of her voice so that Joss wouldn't detect her nervousness and insist on accompanying her.
"You do not need to do things on your own when you have me, babe," Joss sighed in exasperation, uneasy with the thought that Alice would be doing something without his close supervision. Sure, his wife is taking her meds diligently but panic attacks can happen anytime and anywhere and Joss wants to be near her if ever that transpires.
"I don't want to be too dependent on you, hon. I want to reclaim myself on my own," Alice murmured as she closed their main door with one final click. She told Joss she would be inquiring about a nearby university as she wants to continue her studies and graduate now that she is free from her responsibilities of being an unwilling mother to her children.
"Alright, but if you need help just call me and I will come rushing," Joss checked his wristwatch again and figured that he still has less than 10 minutes before his break ended, just enough time to make a quick phone call without being tagged for over break.
"Silly, go take your well-deserved rest. I'll be fine," Alice smiled nervously as she surveyed her reflection on a parked vehicle's shiny exterior. She wants to make sure that she looks presentable enough to get the result she has been hoping for for months.
A wounded animal is the most dangerous type especially if it's a mother.
Win woke up to the incessant ringing of his phone. Seeing that it was an unknown number, he sleepily answered the call thinking that it is the usual automated message from his phone service provider reminding him to pay his bills before the due date.
"I miss you, Win," a familiar voice blurted out from the other end of the call and Win almost dropped his phone in shock.
"Who is this?" Win tried to keep his voice stern and uninterested but the loud beating of his heart muted every other sound in his room. He is supposed to be on his rest day today and Claire left the house early to go to work since it's a weekday.
