Aanya's heart overflowed with joy, an elation she could hardly contain, as a newfound sense of hope washed over her. With anticipation and excitement, she opened her contact app on her phone, fixating her gaze on the names Soph and Tessa, recently added to her list of contacts. It had been nearly two long years since she last tasted the sweetness of true friendship, leaving her yearning for the warmth and connection that had been absent from her life for far too long. Aanya longed to forge her own circle of friends, one that existed beyond the confines of her relationship with Connor and the boundaries of her family.

Aanya's thoughts drifted back to her vibrant college days, where her social life flourished with an unparalleled vitality. Joining a popular sorority on campus had opened doors to a world where friendships bloomed effortlessly. Surrounded by a lively crowd of companions, her weekends became a tapestry of parties and gatherings, and wherever she wandered on campus, she was met with familiar faces, greeted with genuine smiles, dabs, and warm hugs. In those precious moments, Aanya felt truly seen and understood, embracing her authentic self without reservation.

But life, as it often does, took a different turn.

Aanya could never pinpoint the exact catalyst for the change, but she knew in her heart that the friendships she once cherished had run their course. It all began with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced everyone into the confines of their homes, leaving Aanya to navigate the turbulent waters of solitude. She found solace in the occasional visits from Connor, who became her steadfast source of support. Financial struggles weighed heavily on her, leaving her unable to seek assistance from her family and threatening her dreams of completing college. The weight of her circumstances bore down on her, and the loss of her valuable friendships and the absence of Connor by her side compounded her devastation.

With a heavy heart, Aanya reached out to her sorority friends, those she had always considered her closest confidants, the kindred spirits she had longed for. Yet, her messages went unanswered, marked as "read" without a glimmer of response. In that stark moment, Aanya came face to face with a bitter truth: no one seemed to care. Amongst her friends, now luxuriating in the comfort of their home vacations, messages requesting mundane favors, like feeding their fish left behind in dorm rooms, arrived sporadically. It became evident that Aanya's cries for support were met with indifference.

To protect herself from further disappointment, Aanya often reminisced about the pain of past relationships—failed friendships and ruined romances. Those experiences served as a tether, grounding her and preventing her from becoming too enthralled, too expectant. She put her phone away, face down, on the old dresser when the TV now stood. She would carefully assess the newfound connection, treading lightly. She found contentment in her own company, treasuring the luxury of solitude. Once, being part of a tight-knit group of twenty friends who were treated as sisters left her with little time for self-discovery. Now, being alone became a testament to her silent independence and being lonely, a reminder that she was very much alive.

The hours slowly elapsed and Connor returned, his facial expression captured the essence of an exhausting day at work. He walked into the apartment with his worn-out backpack on his shoulder. The threads that held the seams together were gradually unweaving. He carried a grocery bag in his left hand, while his right hand shut the door closed behind him.

"Hey!" He greeted Aanya, who was sitting on his chair at her own desk.

"Hey, how was your day?" Aanya inquired.

"It was fine."

Their exchange was brief. Aanya decided to give him some quiet time to himself so he could recuperate. As he walked to the kitchen to drop off the groceries, Aanya stood up and rolled Connor's office chair back to his own desk. She picked up the spare chair from the dining table and silently brought it to hers. The apartment was very quiet. All that could be heard was the low, blowing noise from the AC unit and the typing of keyboards that came from either side of the room. They both stayed in their own world for a while, not keeping track of time.
