Collin. It's all I hear in my head all day. Being at school with him is the best part of my day. Recently he has been at school less and less. Collin has always been my favorite person to daydream about. He is such a sweet boy that I am surprised that he doesn't have more friends. I always see him sitting off by himself. The last time I saw him at school I saw him sitting with Jacob and his friends. They all think I'm weird I'm sure. I'm always watching Collin but I never make eye contact with him. I know the old legends aren't really but there is just something about them that I don't want to risk. So I stare at Collin any chance I get and the second I see that he is starting to turn in my direction I look away. The elders tell the legends at every bonfire I have been to. I love hearing them. They make me feel special to be about of this tribe. Of course hearing about these great protectors always makes me feel better. After a bad day at home I will sometimes go to Billy Black's house to hear the legends to cheer me up. I know it sounds silly but hearing the legends of my people is a comfort to me.
I am standing outside the Black residence. My parent's argue a lot so I am typically here. Most people who know me don't even go to my house to find me anymore. I am either with Billy or I'm at the beach. I wanted to go to the beach but for some reason I have found myself here. I don't know why though. I know Billy would tell me that my ancestors are trying to help me in some way. I take in a deep breath and decide there is no point in denying the path of my ancestors. I walk up and knock on the door. I can hear a laugh on the other side. I watch as the door opens but I don't see Billy. I look up and look right into the eyes of Collin. I felt like the world stopped. I could stare at his eyes all day. He has a perfect shade of brown for his eyes. I know from the legends that this would be imprinting. I know that sounds ridiculous but it gives me hope and peace of mind. Staring at Collin all day is nothing compared to looking at his eyes for just a few minutes.
"Andrea are you alright?" Billy asked.
I blinked a few times and then looked away from Collin. I look to Billy and see him in the house behind Collin.
"I'm alright Billy." I said.
"I didn't expect you today. I thought you would have gone down to the beach since Jacob is home." He said.
"Yeah that was the plan but I found myself here." I said. "Guess I took your advice and listened to my ancestors."
"They always know what's best." He said. "Come on in there is a few things you should know."
I nodded. I look at Collin to see that he is stiill staring at me. I can guess that he has never looked away from me. He stepped to the side and let me walk into the house. I walked straight to Billy. I gave him the biggest smile I could.
"Fights again?" He asked.
"I take up to much space today." I said.
"You never take up to much space here." He said.
"Thank you Billy." I said.
"I would like to disagree." Jacob said.
I looked over to the couch and saw him sitting there. I could see his small smile so I knew he was joking.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah. Totally. Always here and in the way." Jacob said.
Billy looked between the two of us. This isn't uncommon for us when Jacob is here. We have a serious love hate relationship at times. I could hear growling coming from behind me. I know I should be concerned about it but I know the legends almost as well as Billy so I'm not to concerned.
"Oh then I guess I should go find Paul and tell him that your being mean." I said.
"No. Anything but that." Jacob said. "I love you so much please don't call Paul."
Billy laughed at the two of us. I crossed my arms and watched Jacob. I know him and Paul disagree on a lot of things. Paul is like my best protector. He lives down the road from me so he knows what I go through at home with all the arguing and telling me that I'm basically a waste of space.
"She won't have to call Paul. He'll be here soon." Collin said.
I turned to look at him. I couldn't help the smile I had.
"Paul is going to be so mad that he's not her favorite anymore." Jacob said.
"Jacob don't start." Billy said.
"Paul will always be my favorite." I said.
"Andrea don't listen to him. He's just going to try to make Paul mad." Billy said.
I looked away from Collin. I walked over to the couch and sat down next to Jacob. He nudged me with his shoulder and I heard a growl again. I couldn't help but smile. I could feel the heat radiating off of Jacob. I know he never had a body temperature like this before. I leaned over closer to him.
"Is your dad going to tell me that the legends are all true?" I asked.
Jacob turned his head to look at me so fast.
"How do you know?" He asked.
"The way Collin looked at me. Your body temperature has gone up from what it used to be. Plus the growling doesn't help things very much." I said.
"Guess we don't have to tell you then." He said.
"So your a werewolf." I said.
"Yep pretty much." He said.
"Collin imprinted on me." I said.
"So smart you are." He said.
I couldn't help but laugh.
"Does that mean you can stop staring at Collin all the time?" He asked.
"I don't know." I said. "He is very pretty to look at."
Jacob made a face and then we both started laughing. I love moments like this with him. Where we are both getting along without Paul being here. These moments are always peaceful. I felt someone sit on the couch next to me. I looked over and saw Collin sitting there. He was looking at me already. I gave him a big smile and leaned closer to him.
I have been sitting with Collin for about ten minutes. I heard the door open and close again.
"Is she ok?" Paul asked.
I could hear some whispers but I couldn't make out anything they were saying. I could tell by his voice that he was concerned.
"Paul she is fine." Billy said.
"I heard her parents." Paul said.
I could hear the footsteps coming toward us. I looked up as Paul walked in. He came over and kneeled down in front of me. He looked over at Collin for a second before looking at me. I sat up so he could make sure I was alright. He put his hands on my cheeks and inspected my face. I put my hands on top of his and smiled.
"I'm alright Paul." I said.
He nodded and leaned his forhead against mine. I heard a growl from next to me and then one from in front of me. I couldn't help the laugh that escaped from me. Paul sighed and leaned away from me.
"So you know now." He said.
"Kinda always knew technically." I said.
"Hows it feel to be an imprint?" He asked.
"Fine. I guess." I said. "The person isn't so terrible."
"Well I'm still your favorite protector." He said.
"Always." I said.
I laughed with Paul. Collin may be my imprinter but Paul has always protected me the best he could.
"Why don't you and Collin go down to the beach and I'll come find you later?" Paul asked.
I nodded. I looked over to Collin but he only stood up and held a hand out to me. I smiled and took it as he helped me up. I looked over to Jacob and thought back to when I first got here. I smiled but he shook his head. I walked with Collin to the door before I turned back.
"Pauly Jacob was being mean to me earlier." I said.
I turned back to Collin to see him smiling. I know Paul is going to do something to Jacob on my behalf. I used my hand that was still in Collin's hand to pull him with me. I walked with him out the door and started pulling him toward the beach. I know we could have gone anywhere but I love going to the beach.
"Are we really doing what Paul said?" Collin asked.
"Of course." I said. "I love being at the beach and I know Paul would never tell me to go somewhere that I could get hurt at."
"You trust Paul a lot then." He said.
"Yeah. He helps a lot when he can." I said. "He lives down the road from me so he knows some of what goes on at home."
"Is it bad at your home?" He asked.
"It's not to bad I guess." I said. "My parents argue a lot and sometimes they put me in the middle. He helps keep my mind off the things they say about me."
"Like taking up to much space?" He asked.
I nodded. I don't really like talking about my parents but I know Collin is going to have to know about everything anyway. It's only a matter of time.
"I don't think you take up to much space." He said. "I would actually miss you if you weren't here. I mean who else is going to stare at me all day but not say a word to me."
I laughed and hit his arm with my own. I guess I was being pretty obvious about it.
"What's it like being a werewolf?" I asked.
"It is pretty great at times." He said.
"Does it hurt?" I asked.
"It did the first time." He said. "It got easier after that. The part that bothers me the most is all the voices."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"When we phase we can't really talk and that makes things a bit difficult. So when we are wolves we can hear each others thoughts. We can't turn it off even though I wish we could sometimes." He said.
"I guess that would be annoying at times." I said.
"Plus all the vampire drama can be a bit much." He said.
"What are vampires like?" I asked.
"Cold." He said.
I laughed. Of course they are cold. They are called cold ones.
"Come on be serious." I said.
"I am being serious." He said. "I know they are called cold ones but saying they are cold just doesn't cover how cold they actually are to the touch."
"What else?" I asked.
"They smell terrible." He said.
I couldn't help the laugh. It was a true laugh. One of the ones that you just can't stop yourself from laughing.
"They smell sickly sweet. It's so sweet that it burns to breathe." He said. "Why so interested in vampires?"
"I'm interested in anything you will tell me." I said.
"What's something that you really want to know?" He asked.
"What's it like to imprint?" I asked.
"Of all things that's what you really want to know." He said. "I thought Billy told you all the stories."
"He did but you are someone who has actually imprinted." I said.
"It's different." He said.
I stopped walking and tugged his arm so he would stop and turn to me. His eyes locked with mine and it was like time stood still again. I didn't want to look away.
"A good different if that's what you are worried about." He said.
"What do you mean by different?" I asked.
"It feels more than just a crush." He said. "It's like all of a sudden my every thought is of you and what I would do to keep you safe and happy. The way your smile makes me feel even when it's not because of me. The pain I feel just thinking about you being hurt in any way. Like my insides are being crushed at just the thought. I don't think I would ever actually survive you being hurt."
"Well it's never going to happen because I have Paul and now you to protect me." I said.
"It could still happen." He said.
"I trust you." I said. "What about you? What is something that you want to really know?"
"Why all the staring?" He asked. "Even before you would watch me like you were waiting for me to turn around and imprint on you but you never actually let me."
"I just always felt drawn to you. I knew from Billy's stories that it was possible. A part of me has always wanted you to imprint on me but the other part was worried about what would happen if you didn't. Then there was the thought of what would happen if you did." I said. "What if you did but you didn't want me?"
"I hope that's still not a concern." He said.
"I think in the back of my mind it always will be. I mean you can always change your mind." I said.
"Andrea there is no changing my mind." He said.
He osunded so sure of his statement like there was no way anyone or anything was ever going to change his mind about how he feels.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"I wanted you before I phased. If phasing is the reason that I end up being with you then I would go through all of this all over again just to make sure it is you that I end up with." He said.
I nodded and looked down at my feet. I never would have thought that Collin and I would be having this conversation. I felt a light kiss being pressed to the top of my head. I looked up and saw him smiling at me.
"Lets get to the beach before Paul comes along and murders me." He said.
I laughed but started walking with him. I hope every day with Collin is like this or maybe even better. I know my future is going to be a lot brighter now that I know Collin is my future. Whatever happens I know everything will turn out ok as long as I have Collin there beside me.
