I have known Quil my whole life. I have been his back up friend for everything. He always would rather be with Embry and Jacob before hanging out with me. Even with knowing that, it still hurt when he just up and left. The boys stopped hanging out with him so he was with me every day. I loved every second of it because I had the one person who I have always had a crush on with me all the time. I did have a boyfriend at one time to try to make Quil jealous but it didn't work so I broke up with him. I felt bad about using him like that. Then all of a sudden Quil stops coming around and won't answer any of my calls. I tried calling for a few days but never got any answer. Then when I went to school I saw him hanging out with Jacob and Embry again. I wanted to be mad but I knew I was just his background friend. He only hangs out with me when he has no one else. It still hurts when he just drops me though.
Sitting in the same cafeteria as the boys is a lot harder than it looks. It never seemed to used to be this hard. Just seeing Quil laughing and smiling without me hurts so bad. I wish so bad that he would look over in my direction but he never does. No matter how much I want him to. I looked down at the table when someone put their stuff down on the table in front of me. I looked up and saw that it was Seth. I know he has been hanging around Quil's group of friends but every once in a while he will sit with me.
"Hello Seth." I said.
"How are you Mae?" He asked.
"I'm fine." I said.
"You have been staring at Quil ever since he sat down." He said.
I looked down at the table again so I couldn't see Quil anymore.
"It's ok to be hurt you know." He said. "I know when Leah and Sam broke up she was hurt for a long time."
"It's not the same. Quil and I were never dating." I said.
"You care about him. That's all that matters." He said. "Your allowed to be hurt."
"I'm fine Seth." I said.
I stood up and started walking away from the table. I know he is just trying to help but at the moment that is not very helpful. I don't want him to tell me that it is ok to be hurt. I want him to tell me that it's alright to be angry and to hate Quil. I know hating Quil seems impossible to me but I want someone to tell me that it's ok to, I was walking in the hallway when I bumped into someone. I looked up and saw Embry standing there.
"Hey Mae." He said.
"Hello Embry." I said.
"How are you?" He asked.
"I'm fine." I said. "I see Quil has forgiven you and Jacob for ditching him."
"Yeah he has." He said. "You can still hang out with us though if you want."
"That's alright. I'm good." I said.
"I know Quil misses you." He said.
I felt my heart skip a beat at that. It is the one thing that I have always wanted to hear Quil say and actually mean. I know that Embry is just saying that to get me to agree to hang out with them again.
"If he missed me that much then he would be the one standing infront of me telling me that." I said. "It's ok Embry. You don't have to lie to me."
"You should talk to him. He has a really good reason. I promise." He said.
"He always does." I said.
I took a step and walked around Embry. I went in search of the one person who normally makes me feel better. Paul Lahote has become my most unlikely friend. He has some really bad anger issues but he doesn't seem all that bad to me. He has helped me out with a lot. I know he is back in the cafeteria so I have to go back in there and be around Quil again.
I walked back into the cafeteria and I saw Embry sitting at the table with Quil and Jacob. I saw him nod his head in my direction. Quil and Jacob both turned around and looked at me. I made eye contact with Quil and I felt my heart drop. I quickly lowered my eyes to the floor before I went on my way to look for Paul. I finally found him sitting at a table with Jared and his girlfriend. I walked over and sat down next to Paul. I could feel eyes on me the whole time. Paul looked down at me and I knew he could tell something was wrong.
"You ok?" He asked.
"Yeah." I said. "Just a hard day."
He put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him. Jared looked behind us and laughed.
"What?" Paul asked.
"Nothing. It just seems like you made a certain trio angry." Jared said.
"They have no reason to be. They are the reason she is having a hard day." Paul said.
Jared glanced between the two of us.
"What do you mean?" Jared asked.
"She likes someone from the great trio." Paul said.
Jared looked at me and his mouth fell open. I laughed at the face he was making.
"So not only are you friends with Paul but you like one of the three people who hate him." Jared said.
"They don't hate him." I said. "They just don't like him that much."
"Same thing." Jared said.
"No it's not." I said.
"Yes it is." He said.
"Don't do it man. You're not going to win this one." Paul said.
"Whatever." Jared said. "Which one?"
"Quil." I said.
"Wow. I wasn't expecting that one. I figured it would be Embry." Jared said.
I laughed a little bit. That's what Paul told me too when I told him that I liked Quil.
"Right. That's what I said." Paul said.
"Definetly think Embry deserves you more than him." Jared said.
"Thanks Jared." I said.
The people in the cafeteria started to get a little quieter. Jared looked behind me again and got quiet. I gave him a look but he just tilted his head to hint to me to look behind me. I was a little confused but I turned around anyway. I saw Quil standing there behind me.
"Hey Mae." He said.
"Quil." I said.
"Can we talk for a minute?' He asked.
I nodded and went to stand up. Paul grabbed my arm so I stopped for a second.
"You don't have to if you don't want to." Paul said.
"You don't get to make decisions for her." Quil said.
"I'm just giving her a choice." Paul said. "If you haven't noticed you don't make decisions for her either."
I put my hand on Paul's arm and he looked over at me.
"It's ok. I'll be fine." I said.
He nodded and I finished standing up. I nodded my head over to the door so Quil would start walking. I followed behind him until we were out in the hallway. I stood with my back on the wall. I waited for him to start talking since he was the one who wanted to talk in the first place.
"Embry told me that he talked to you." He said.
"Yeah he did." I said.
"I do miss you, you know." He said.
"Yeah. You're just closer to Embry and Jacob than you are to anyone else." I said. "I've heard it all before Quil. It's fine you don't need to make up excuses."
"I have a really good reason this time I promise." He said.
"I'm sure you do." I said.
"I just want to protect you Mae." He said.
"You don't need to." I said. "I'm not your problem."
"Of course your not a problem. Your just someone that I need to protect." He said.
"You don't need to protect me Quil." I said. "I think I'm good on needing any of your protection."
He looked at me closely and I could see the confusion on his face. I looked down at the ground and waited for whatever question I know he is about to ask.
"What do you mean by that?" He asked.
"Come on you can't possibly be that stupid." I said. "Even Seth and Paul know the truth before you."
"That's because you have told them." He said. "You don't talk to me."
"I didn't have to tell them Quil. It is painfully obvious." I said. "Your the only one who doesn't see it."
"See what?" He asked.
I could feel the tears brimming in my eyes but I wouldn't let them fall. There is no way that I am going to let him see that he upset me this much even though I know he probably didn't mean to.
"Don't worry about it now." I said. "I'm going to go back to my friends."
I went to walk away from him but he grabbed my arm and stopped me.
"Let go Quil." I said.
"Talk to me Mae." He said. "Tell me what is going on that everyone but me seems to know about."
"It doesn't matter anymore." I said.
"Clearly it does if it is bothering you." He said.
I pulled my arm away from him and he let my arm fall to my side. I heard a door close and I looked back to see Paul and Jared walking out into the hallway where Quil and I are. I heard what sounded like a growl and turned around to look at Quil. He was shaking a little bit. I was concerned that something may be wrong so I took a few steps back.
"Mae back up." Paul said.
I looked back over to Paul. I was confused. If something was wrong with Quil then someone needed to help him and not just back away.
"What? Why?" I asked.
"Please just back up." Paul said.
I took a few steps back like he asked and heard another growl. I looked between Paul and Quil.
"I'm not going to hurt my own imprint Paul." Quil said.
"Your what?" I asked.
"You know it doesn't work that way." Paul said.
"Can someone please tell me what is going on?" I asked.
Paul looked over at me and I raised an eyebrow to tell him to hurry up.
"I promise I will explain everything later but right now I need you to go with Jared." Paul said.
I was confused but I nodded anyway. I know Paul wouldn't hurt me. I started to walk closer to Jared when I heard another growl. This time it sounded a lot more animalistic. I turned around to look back at Paul and Quil but when I did I only saw Paul standing there. In the place Quil was standing at before there was now a wolf standing there. I stepped back and slowly made my way closer to Jared. Paul and Jared didn't seem freaked out about Quil suddenly becoming a wolf so I know they must know something about it. I felt two warm hands on my shoulders. I looked back and saw that Jared had placed his hands on my shoulders.
"Did that really just happen?" I asked.
"Yeah." He said. "Come on and we will explain everything."
I nodded and let him lead the way out of the school. I have heard the legends that have made their way around they reservation but I never thought that the stories I have heard would ever be true. It doesn't seem possible for something like this to be real in any kind of way. It shouldn't be physically possible for this to happen.
Jared took me to Sam and Emily's place. We have been sitting in his truck since we got here. I haven't made any kind of move to leave the seat I am occupying. I have just been staring out the window. On the way to Emily's house Jared told me the truth. They are werewolves. He also told me the truth about what actually happened to Emily.
"Do you want to sit on the porch and wait for Quil to get here?" Jared asked. "I know he has a few things he wants to tell you about."
"When can I go home?" I asked.
"Sam is going to want to talk to you before you leave. I just want you to have some time to process everything." He said.
"I'm not going to tell anyone." I said.
"I believe you but there is still one thing that you don't know about yet." He said.
"Like what?" I asked.
"You really need to hear that part from Quil." He said. "Him and Paul should be here any minute."
I nodded. I got my stuff off the floor and put it on my lap.
"Ok. Waiting on the porch sounds like a good idea." I said.
"I'm so glad you think so." He said.
I laughed and made my way out of his truck. I walked with him up to the porch and then I sat down on the steps. Jared kept on walking until he went inside. I know he was only wanting me to come to the porch so that he wouldn't feel as bad about going inside. I don't mind the air. It is helping me come to terms with everything actually being real and not a dream. I was watching the driveway. I saw Paul's truck pulling up in front of the house. I could see Quil sitting in the front seat. I know him and I are about to have a very long talk. Paul's truck came to a stop and I stood up waiting for the two to get out. Paul was out of the truck and over to me first. He gave me a big hug and I know he was upset that I found out this way.
"Are you ok?" He asked.
"Yeah. Jared has been very helpful." I said.
"He better have been." He said.
I laughed. Paul looked back at Quil and then back to me.
"I'll give you guys a few minutes." He said.
"Can you take me home after Quil and I talk?" I asked.
"Of course." He said.
"Thank you." I said.
He kissed the top of my head and then walked inside. I looked over to Quil. He seemed like he didn't know what to say.
"So you guys are all werewolves." I said.
"Yeah." He said. "There are other things you need to know though."
"I'm not going to tell anyone about you guys. It'll be our secret." I said.
"I know you won't." He said. "There is something really important I need to tell you though."
"What is it?" I asked.
"As werewolves we have what we call an imprint." He said.
"What's that?" I asked.
"It's kind of like a soul mate but so much more than that at the same time." He said.
"It sounds pretty serious." I said.
"Yeah it is." He said. "It also means none of the guys can ever hurt you."
"Why not?" I asked.
"It's just the rules. Imprints can't be harmed." He said. "Even after today if you don't want to talk to any of us just know that we will all protect you."
"Why would you do that?" I asked.
"I imprinted on you earlier at lunch." He said.
"That's why you were growling at Paul." I said.
He nodded. As much as I like Quil this is not how I want things to go. I don't want him to be with me because he has to be.
"That's going to be a problem." I said.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I've had a crush on you since we were kids. I don't want you to be with me because you have to be." I said.
"I don't have to be with you." He said. "I just really want to be."
"Until today you haven't wanted to be with me Quil." I said. "I have always been your back up when Embry and Jacob couldn't hang out with you. I have always known that you were going to be my forever because I always wanted you to be. I don't want to be yours because you don't have any other choice."
"It's not exactly like that." He said.
"Yes it is." I said. "Take some time and think about the last few years. If you can honestly tell me that you would still want to be with me even with out the imprint then we can talk. Until then I would like to go home."
I walked away from him and went inside. I saw Paul sitting at a table. He looked over at me and I could tell that he heard what I had just told Quil outside.
"Are you ready?" He asked.
I nodded. He stood up and walked over to me. He put his arm around my shoulders and we walked back outside. I thought maybe Quil would still be there but he was already gone. I know he didn't drive here so he must have turned into a wolf and left.
"Everything will be alright." Paul said. "Quil maybe a bit slow but we all know how he feels about you. Even before today."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"When we are wolves we can hear each other's thoughts." He said.
I nodded. Paul opened the door for me and I hopped into the truck. Hopefully Quil will figure everything out on his own soon. I know what I want but I don't want him to be forced to be with me. I want him to be with me because he wants to be with me. Being forced to be with me will never turn out to be the best for us in the long run. Sure it might be fine in the beginning but in the end he will end up hating me for it. I don't want that to happen. Even if I have to leave for a while for him to realize how he truly feels without the imprint.
