I have lived close to the Clearwater's for years. I've always had a crush on Seth. We are the same age. It's been a few years since Harry, Seth's dad, died of a heart attack. I have tried to talk to Seth but he never actually looks at me. It's a little hard being the only pale face going to school in LaPush. Everyone else is super tan but I'm not. I was at the beach but a few kids from school showed up so I left and started walking home. Sue always warns me about walking alone. I heard a truck rumble as it pulled up next to me. I looked over and saw Paul. He hangs out with the same group as Seth.
"It's Ella right?" He asked.
"Ya." I said.
"Are you heading home?" He asked.
I nodded. I know Paul hangs out with Seth so he must be a good person but I don't really know him all that well.
"I can give you a ride. I'm heading over to get Seth." He said.
"It's ok. I can walk." I said.
"It's a thirty minute walk. I can have you there in fifteen." He said. "Please Ella just get in the truck."
I sighed and walked closer. I opened the door and got in. I put my seatbelt on and then looked at him.
"See that wasn't so hard." He said.
I laughed and looked away from him. He started driving. I was thankful for the ride but was also cautious. I have heard the reputation that Paul has. He is very short tempered. Most of the guys Seth hangs out with are all short tempered which is strange because Seth is the complete opposite. He is so nice to everyone all of the time. Honestly I don't know how he does it. I don't think I could be nice to everyone like that all the time.
Paul pulled up in front of the Clearwater house. I looked over at him with a smile.
"Thank you for the ride." I said.
"Your welcome Ella." Paul said.
I opened the door to hop out and bumped right into someone. I looked up and saw Seth standing there. He was looking at me for the first time in the past few years. He stood there looking down at me since he is taller than me. He wasn't saying anything and he wasn't moving. I heard Paul trying to hide a snicker. I looked back at him for a second before looking back at Seth.
"Seth are you alright?" I asked.
Seth blinked a few times and gave his head a little shake. He smiled real big as he looked at me.
"I'm good Ella." He said.
I heard the door to the small house open. I looked around Seth and saw Sue standing at the door.
"Seth please tell Emily to call me." Sue yelled.
I giggled at that. Seth somehow smiled even bigger at the sound of me laughing. I stepped away from him and I saw his smile fall just the tiniest bit.
"I will mom." Seth yelled.
Sue looked over at me and I waved to her.
"Oh Ella dear. It's so great to see you." She said. "Are you doing better?"
I glanced over at Seth and he seemed a bit confused. I looked down at the ground for a few moments before I looked back to her.
"I'm alright." I said.
"Oh dear." She said.
Sue knows me pretty well so she knows when I mean it and when I don't. I thought Seth knew me just as well but he has practically ignored me the last few years so he can't know me as well as I thought he did.
"Come in dear and we can talk about it." She said.
"I would love to but I need to get home." I said.
"Come in and I will call your mom." She said.
"She's not going to take no as an answer." Paul said.
I looked back at him and nod. I looked at Seth one more time before I walked around him. I walked up to Sue and we both walked inside.
I have been sitting with Sue all after noon. I told her all about missing Seth and the way he acted earlier when he saw me. I told her all about the people at school and how they treat me. I miss talking to her like this. I know my mom loves me but she doesn't really have the time to sit with me and have talks like this.
"My dear things are going to start looking up for you." She said.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"I'm going to have that son of mine make sure it does." She said.
"Oh no. Don't do that." I said. "I don't want him to be forced to hang out with me. I'm alright being a loner."
"Nonsense. He has missed you terribly but has just been to stubborn to do something about it." She said.
I laughed and we heard the door open. It was only a few seconds later that Seth walked into the room. He saw me and he stopped. I looked down to the floor and fiddled with my hands.
"I guess I should be going now." I said.
I went to stand up but I heard a scoff come from Sue.
"Nonsense. You sit down while I go have a chat with that son of mine." She said.
I glanced up at her with a raised eyebrow. I looked over at Seth and tried to show how sorry I was for what his mother was about to do to him. He looked so confused but I know there was no way that I was going to be able to help him in this situation. Sue walked over to him and started dragging him into the kitchen. I could hear her talking to him but I couldn't make out what she was saying. I giggled a little bit everytime I heard Seth try to say something and hear her smack him on his arm. I know it's rude to listen to people's conversation but I couldn't hear what they were saying. I could just hear her hit him every once in a while and I just guess he was trying to say something stupid that she didn't like. After a few minutes in the kitchen I saw Seth start walking back into the room. I waited to see Sue but she never came back in.
"She want's me to talk to you." Seth said.
"Oh." I said. "That's alright you don't have to. I'm sure you are busy with your friends. I wouldn't want to keep you."
"I've actually been meaning to talk to you." He said.
I looked up at him confused. He came over and sat on the small coffee table that was in front of the couch I was sitting on.
"What about?" I asked.
"About everything that has happened in the last few years." He said.
"It's alright. You don't have to explain." I said. "Sometimes people drift apart after something happens."
"No that's not it." He said. "I mean yeah something did happen but that's not why I shut you out. I mean I guess part of it is why I shut you out but I didn't want to. I had to do it."
"Seth what are you talking about?" I asked.
"I can show you better than I can explain it." He said. "Will you please come outside with me?"
I could tell from the look on his face that he was practically begging me to go with him. I sighed but nodded nonetheless. He stood up and held his hand out to me. I took it and he helped me up. I noticed that his hand seemed a lot warmer than it used to. I walked with him outside. He stopped on the back porch and turned to look at me.
"Will you promise to stand right here?" He asked.
I was still really confused but I nodded. He took a deep breath and hopped down from the porch. He took several steps away from the porch before he stopped. I watched him as his body started to shake. I went to take a step toward him but he shook his head. I watched him go from the Seth I have always known to a very large wolf. I felt my legs start to feel like jello. I held onto the rail and slowly lowered myself down to the porch. I heard the door open and I looked up to see Sue. She had some clothes in her hands.
"You are going to want to close your eyes dear." She said.
I did as she told me to. I kept my eyes closed for a while until I felt a warm hand on my arm. I snapped my eyes opened and looked at Seth. He was sitting on the porch next to me. I glanced around but didn't see Sue anywhere.
"So that happened." I said. "How long have you been able to do that?"
"Since my dad died." He said.
"Is this the reason you have been ignoring me?" I asked.
He looked down and nodded.
"Why weren't you even looking at me though?" I asked.
"That's an even longer story." He said.
"I've got time." I said.
"We have this thing called imprinting. It happens after we shift. We can't chose who we imprint on. It's one hundred percent up to the ancestor's. In order to imprint though you have to look that person in the eyes." He said.
"You were worried you would imprint on me." I said.
He nodded. I looked down and felt a horrible feeling rush through my body. I was like someone was stabbing me in the chest.
"Everyone told me that it seemed like you would be the perfect person I would imprint on. They tried to get me to look at you to see if they were right but I never did. I actually made it a point not to so we would never know for sure." He said. "Paul being Paul though doesn't like to be wrong."
"So earlier was all planned?" I asked. "He didn't just happen to be driving by and saw me on his way to come get you?"
"He was but when he saw you he saw an opportunity that he just couldn't pass up." He said.
"Was he right?" I asked.
"They all were. My mom included. She said from day one that it would be you." He said.
"So you imprinted on me?" I asked.
"Yes. When you bumped into me getting out of the truck." He said.
I glanced up at him and I saw his face fall.
"I'm sorry that you had to imprint on me." I said.
I went to stand up but he pulled me back down next to him.
"I'm not." He said.
"You just said you were worried that you would imprint on me though." I said. "I can guess that you didn't want it to be me."
"I did want it to be you. I was worried that if I imprinted on you then that would put you in more danger because you would know about all the scary things out in the world." He said.
"You were worried because of my safety and not because you didn't like me right?" I asked.
"How could anyone not like you Ella?" He asked.
"People at school seem to do a pretty good job of not liking me." I said.
I looked down at the porch again.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"It's not important." I said.
"Anything involving you is important to me." He said.
"Tell me more about imprinting." I said.
"It's the greatest thing ever. I don't have to keep secrets from you anymore. I can talk to you whenever now." He said. "I can make you smile and laugh again. I can make you be happy again."
"What's it feel like to imprint on someone?" I asked.
"It feels a little weird. When you first meet their eyes it's like you can see your whole future with that person flash before your eyes. Then it feels like gravity switches and she is the only thing that matters. She becomes the center of your whole world." He said.
"That sounds pretty awesome." I said.
He chuckled and nodded. I looked out and I could see a few stars trying to peek through the tree's.
"I guess we should probably get you home now." He said.
"Can you walk with me?" I asked.
"Of course." He said.
He stood up and held his hand out to me. I took it and he helped me up. I kept my hand in his.
"Is this the reason your a lot warmer than you used to be?" I asked.
"Yeah. This is the reason." He said.
I nodded. We walked in a comfortable silence to my house. I know that even after all this time I was wrong earlier. Seth knows me way more than I thought he did.
"Will you ever tell me what you meant about people at school?" He asked.
"Some other time." I said.
"Can you tell me tomorrow?" He asked. "All of the guys want to go hang out down on the beach tomorrow. You can come and walk with me on the beach and tell me all about it."
"Sure. That sounds lovely." I said.
He nodded. He finally let go of my hand and I walked to the door.
"I'll see you tomorrow Ella." He said.
"See you tomorrow Seth." I said.
I opened the door and walked inside. I gave him one last smile before I closed the door. I couldn't help how happy I felt. I always liked Seth but to know that he likes me as well is the best thing ever.
I have been excited all night to have the chance to hang out with Seth again. I know there is a chance I am going to run into someone from school while on the beach but it is worth it to see Seth again. He called this morning and I told him that I would meet him at the beach. He said that all the guys will be there with their imprints so I will have plenty of people to talk to. I'm not sure if I will talk to anyone other than Seth but it would be nice to meet the people who have been hanging out with him. I gathered all of my stuff and walked outside. I made sure to lock the door before I started heading to the beach. I know I'm going to have a long walk in order to get to the beach so I thought over everything that Seth had told me last night. I wonder which one of Seth's ancestor's decided that I was the perfect match for him. I know Harry really liked me so maybe he was the one who chose me for Seth. I finally made it to the beach and just as expected there were people from school already at the beach. I could see Ryan and his group of friends. They are mostly the only ones who bother me most of the time. I looked down the beach more and I could already see Seth playing soccer with Paul and Jared. I took in a deep breath and decided to make my way over to Seth and hope that Ryan doesn't see me. I tried to be as quiet as possible. I was almost past Ryan's group.
"Ella!" Ryan yelled.
I stopped and sighed. Of course he would see me. I looked up and saw Seth. I started walking toward him and tried to ignore Ryan. I could hear someone running up behind me. I just kept my head down and kept walking. I felt someone grab my arm and turn me around to them.
"Where you going Ella?" Ryan asked.
"I'm just joining my friends on the beach." I said.
Ryan looked up and saw who I was walking to. He let out a thundering laugh.
"Come on." He said. "Where are you really going? There's no way Clearwater and his friends are hanging out with you after he ditched you the last few years."
"My friends are just down from Seth." I said.
I was hoping he would believe my lie and let me go.
"We both know you don't have friends Ella." He said.
"Please let me go." I said.
I looked down and tried to move my arm away from him. He laughed at my attempt.
"Let her go Ryan." Someone said.
I jerked my head up and saw Seth standing next to me. I gave him a smile.
"Sure. Whatever you say. Don't want your cult coming after me." Ryan said.
Ryan let go of my arm but I could see Seth shaking a little bit. I remembered that he did that last night before he turned into a wolf. I put my hand on his arm to try to help calm him down.
"Are you going to be Ella's rescue man again?" Ryan asked.
"I'm sure you'll find out if you don't leave her alone." Seth said.
"We'll see how long it last this time." Ryan said.
Ryan laughed and started walking back to his friends. Seth took a step forward but I grabbed his arm and pulled him back toward me.
"He's not worth it Seth." I said.
"Is that what you were talking about last night?" He asked.
"Yeah." I said.
"I'm sorry I left you to deal with that on your own." He said.
"Your here now." I said.
"I'm never leaving you alone again." He said.
He put his arms around my waist and lifted me up. I laughed as he started walking over to everyone else. Even after everything the last few years and learning his secret last night I feel completely happy. I would be more than happy to have Seth by my side forever. I know some people would say that I should be mad at him after ignoring me for so long but I understand why he did it. He wanted to keep me safe for as long as possible. Even if it meant that we were both miserable for a short time. He just wanted to keep me safe. Being with Seth forever is one thing I know that I will always be able to count on in my life.
