The Fourth of July in Cousins is more than just a national holiday; it's a time for family traditions, laughter, and the simple joys of summer. As the sun rises over the Summer House, everyone begins to prepare for a day filled with barbecues, beachside parties, and the iconic fireworks that light up the night sky.
It's a celebration that blends together the nation's birth with personal, meaningful traditions that everyone cherishes.
In the midst of the preparations, the house is alive with energy. Susannah decorates the entire house, transforming it into a festive space that mirrors the excitement of the day. The Dads arrive for the weekend, adding to the fun, while the boys have their own special tasks—steaming clams and preparing for the evening's fireworks. It's clear that this time of year brings everyone closer together, each person playing a role in making the day memorable.
In the morning, Jeremiah, Belly and Sarah sat at the kitchen table, sharing a quiet breakfast as they watched the rest of the family hustle and bustle around them.
"Can I finish your milk, Sar Bear?" Jeremiah wondered, already eyeing the half-empty bowl in front of her with a mischievous grin, knowing full well that she wouldn't mind sharing.
"Sure." Sarah replied, her lips curving into a small smile. She slid the bowl toward him, never giving a second thought to her best friend's request.
Sarah couldn't help but chuckle softly as she watched Jeremiah drink the milk from the bowl, a goofy, contented look on his face as he tilted the bowl back with an ease only he could pull off. When he finished, a milk mustache sat just above his top lip, and her amusement grew.
It was such a simple, ridiculous moment, but one that felt so perfectly them. She loved how Jeremiah could make something as mundane as drinking milk into a moment of lighthearted fun, his carefree spirit always making her smile.
"Yo, I'm gonna go wash the clams." Conrad suddenly announced, breaking the light moment when he entered the kitchen. "Did you get the lighter fluid?"
Jeremiah nodded. "Mm. Yeah, it's already on the beach."
Conrad whistled lightly in response. He had his own agenda, always doing his part in his own laid-back way, and with that, he walked out of the house through the back door, probably heading straight for the beach to get the clams ready for the evening's cookout.
The kitchen felt momentarily quieter, the sounds of footsteps fading. Then, as if on cue, Steven entered, his posture as straight as always, his dark blue dress shirt a striking contrast to the more casual attire everyone else was wearing. He headed straight for the fridge, looking like he was on a mission to grab something to snack on.
"Are we done with the portrait yet?" He asked as he rummaged through the fridge.
"Yeah, for today." Susannah replied, joining him in the kitchen as she cleaned her paintbrushes, the soft clink of water splashing over the brushes filling the air. "But you do look good in a dress shirt, Steven." She turned her attention to Belly. "Uh, which makes me think if Belly doesn't hurry up and ask Cam to that ball, you should take her."
