Chapter Two: I'd be forced to think you're a serial killer

"Hi Toni." I beamed at her. Not my smartest move 'cause when she saw me she scowled.

After my encounter with Zed, the rest of the day went pretty smoothly. Like it always does. I had just gotten to work about 10 minutes late.

Sometimes I question myself and the level of idiocy I must possess for this disguise and the name Avery Adams, then I remember my big college dreams and put on the red coloured wig and thick, black glasses and walk all the way to Tate's, ignoring the voice at the back of my head screaming, 'This is a very bad idea', but since that's the only thing it ever does- scream at me and point out every little thing I did wrong-, it's not that hard.

I work 4 hours from 5pm to 9pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. And on Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm. I'm free all through Tuesday, Friday and Saturday except when Benny wants to call me in for an extra shift if someone had to be absent, but I made it clear to him that I'm not free during school hours.

When I walked into the restaurant it was bustling with people. Tate's was a common hangout for students especially from my school.

Avery was pretty much on a one on one name basis with most of my classmates, although Charvi knew them already. It made things easier actually. I wouldn't make slip ups like when I first began working, and then have to make an excuse for how I knew them since now we were friends.

Toni had an annoyed expression on her face when I got there. We weren't friends, but we were friendly, if that made sense. Well if you could count her snarky remarks and rude dissing friendly, but I knew it was all a joke and that deep down she liked me even if she denied it.

"And where have you been?" She replied with a frown.

"Don't frown so much, you'll get wrinkles."

Her frown deepened. "I have every right to frown when my co-worker is late, making me cover her shift and just waltzes in here smiling."

"I didn't waltz, I walked." Her eyes just narrowed at that. "Okay, I'm sorry. It's just ten minutes. I had a family issue." I lied.

"And what was that?" It's not like I could actually tell her what it was, so I just said "My dog died."

"You don't have a dog."

"Well then I bought one and it died."

"You're a terrible liar."

"I know." I groaned. "I'm sorry. Please don't tell Benny."

"I never do."

I smiled and was about to say "Because you simply just adore me", but it's like she read my mind 'cause she just said "Don't" and left.

Oh, how I love our conversations.

I got behind the counter and began my shift.

Although the restaurant still had so many customers, I was left in peace. Seemed like people rather sit and talk than eat. Weird, right?

About an hour into my shift, a familiar voice caused me to raise my head from the book I was reading. It was titled 'A Court Of Mist And Fury' by Sarah J. Maas. Funny how the tables turned and the perfect one for her ended up being Rhysand not Tamlin. How was it so easy for her to change our minds? Author of the year. At least, either she or Rick Riordan, but I prefer to watch the Percy Jackson movies.

I would have scowled at whoever it was if it wasn't her.

"Hey Avery." Leyla waved at me.

"Hi Leyla!" I beamed at her. She tried her best to smile, but knowing my friend it wasn't original. Would she wonder if I asked? We usually talk a lot, but would this be invasion of her privacy? After all this time I couldn't believe I was having difficulties. It's not my fault, Avery Adams is socially inept.
