Chapter Two

She and Collin sat on the top of the stairs listening to their parents discuss loudly about something that had transpired with the name Sandra had mentioned earlier, Jina DeVonior. Kylier's sister.

The DeVonior family were just as old as their family, the two had settle on the Island within months of each other. She had grown up with all the legendary stories that circulated around the other founder family, DeVonior.

It wasn’t as if they were friends or anything. Her father didn’t run in Mr. DeVonior circles because he wasn’t ever on the island. She had read they lived in England, and to confirm this, Kylier had said so.

“Are you sure you have no idea what they are discussing” Collin whispered for the fifth time in about ten minuets. She shoved him with the side of her body.

“Quite it already, I said no. All I know is the moment Sandra said that girl’s name, mom freaked, literally freaked out.”

“Come on let’s go to the hidden room,” he stood up and she followed like a shadow.

The hidden room was their nickname for the tiny room behind the false wall in the living room. They had discovered it when they were younger playing hide and seek. It was a room designed for quick escapes to the outside in past years. Together they created a trap door, located in her closet that sat directly above the spot beside the living room.

Collin had been bored one day and talked her into the project by using his carpentry skills. The whole first week of her twelfth summer was making that door and ladder, because they had to do it when their parents and no one was around to hear the pounding.

Then when they had showed Leah she laughed saying, a rope ladder would have done the job, less noisy. That was when Collin punched her in the shoulder for the first time saying snidely, "climbing back up would be a bitch though." After that Hailey noticed things between them became increasingly weird.

Leah, she had come to find out later, really liked her brother, yeck! It was a tight secret shared between two best friends, while her idiot brother was clueless to her affections.

And no matter how many times Leah tried different additudes toward him, he still didn’t get it. She could probably walk right up to him kiss him and walk away leaving him baffled to why she did it. Boys, go figure!

Her parents voices carried through the paper thin walls as they stood there listening in with the dust covered walls around them.

“Mary calm down, there is a reasonable explanation to all this,” her dad’s patient tone tried to sooth her mother.

“What could possible motivate them to come back here now after all we have discussed in the past?” her mother’s voice sounded strained.

Her dad didn't answer right off.

“I know that look, what are you not telling me Jack!” came her mom's tight voice.

Again a silent pause followed, Collin looked at her frowning, and she just shrugged back. they couldn't talk with out her parents hearing them.

“I wrote to Neigell excepting his offer to talk. To reopen the discussion of the matter.”

“You did what, and with out consulting with me first? Why would you do this Jack?” her mother first sound shocked then hurt.

“You know why Mary, I can not turn a blind eye to what is going to happen to our daughter. I did what was in the best interest for her wealth fare.” her father voice held a hard edge in it.
