Chapter Fourteen

An hour later the door to her room flew open and a bunch of colorful balloons burst in going everywhere. In a flash someone in a blur ran at her engulfed her body in the most uncomfortable hug.

“Oh my god Hailey I thought you were dead!” Leah mumbled into her shoulder.

“ Ah Leah your hurting my arm,” she managed to get her off with the help of Collin.

Leah wiped at her wet eyes,

“don’t ever do that again. Or I‘ll just have to bring you back and kill you.”

She looked at her best friend whose eyes were red and puffy outlined with black smudges as if she hadn’t slept either.

She nodded as a silent understanding passed between them.

“Oh and here,” Leah pulled out of her sweat shirt a stuffed worn out black and white dog, that had been patched more than a quilt.

Hailey reached for patches her favorite sleep dog.

“Patches,” Hailey held him close to her face taking in the scent of home that made her feel melancholy. She had this stuff dog since forever.

“Thanks,” she gave him a squeeze. She couldn’t give him up like the rest of her stuff animals.

“But Hailey you really had us scared.” Leah looked at Collin. In a blink she saw something pass between them and then it was gone.

“Always the drama queen L,” Collin kidded her.

“Shut up,” but she said it with a smile.

Before she could question Leah her door opened again letting in her dad and Jackson distracting her.

He looked exhausted too, but he smiled and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

It was afternoon before everyone of her family made an appearance and now she was wiped.

Leah had brushed out her hair and braided it down for her when Collin came back fresh faced and showered. When had he left?

Suddenly tiered from doing nothing Hailey felt her eye lids get heavy. Leah joined Collin  on the made up cot talking and laughing quietly. Brien sat watching the surfing channel.

She had the feeling they weren’t going to leave her alone.

She had just closed her eyes when the air stirred letting in fresh cooler air. Who now?

As whispered words of exchange happened Hailey peeked to see who it was and moaned inside, because she was hoping he wouldn’t come. She could fake sleeping hoping he would just take a hint and leave but then she got the feeling he wouldn’t.

Resolved Hailey opened her eyes to stare into his gorgeous ones. A new warmth that wasn’t there before generated there now gave her a weird feeling deep inside her stomach.

Must be the jell-O.

“Hello,” he offered first.

“Hello,” she whispered back softly.

“Hey we’re going to the café, you want anything?” Collin asked her as both Leah and Brien stood at the door.

Shaking her head no they left in a awkward rush.

The room suddenly felt small and she readjusted herself nervously. She ran her hand down her long braid feeling at a disadvantage here.

“I think I owe you a, ...” she began but he pressed his finger tip gently on her lips.
