*Chapter Twelve
Hailey had just gotten inside her room when she heard her name shouted up the stairs.
Peeking out her door she called back, “yah mom?”
“Study now please!” her mom’s tone wasn’t demanding but an underline tone told her not to argue either.
“K” she responded.
Glancing over her shoulder at Leah she whined, “I’ll be back.”
Leah gave her the thumbs up signal. “Chin up!”
Hailey grimaced,
“what, so they can slap me!” with that said she was out the door.
Pausing at the french doors going into the study she prepared herself by taking a couple of deep breaths, resolving what ever they had to say she would at least listen. Pushing open the doors she spotted her dad at his usual place behind his desk. My mom stood ridged facing the ocean with her arms crossed protectively. Hailey nervously looked from her back to her dad who by the way was keenly watching her.
Two things spoke volumes right off, the set of his jaw and the resolved expression in his eyes.
“Close the door Hailey, and sit.” He indicated to the love seat in the middle of the room.
With the click of the door, she suddenly wanted to run from the room, thinking that what ever they wanted to tell her was going to change her life forever. Fate it would seem was up close and personal this summer, in that it was going to be plagued with her unwanted ‘wants’.
The study suddenly wasn’t big enough as she stepped down into it, Hailey looked nervously at the side door. The word ‘escape’ flashed in her brain.
“What’s up?’ she tried to sound casual sitting down on the edge of the love seat drumming her fingers on her knees nervously.
The moment her mom faced her the tension the room skyrocketed, feeling on pins and needles.
Her moms red rimmed eyes and dark circles under them accompanied by the strained expression, had her mind blown.
Her mom is a very collective person, always in control and to see her composure like this was freaken her out. Was what they were about to tell her that bad! Did she have cancer or was she being rejected by the Devonior family. In that case it would be good news, well at least for her it would be.
“What’s wrong? Did you find out about the fountain? I mean we didn’t mean any harm, . . .”
The words died away as she realized she was rambling.
Her parents were starring at her funny, like she was a aberration.
She shrugged, “we did take our shoe’s off and besides Kylier was with us,” she rubbed her hands together nervously.
Her dad sorta grinned and clearing his voice saying, “no Hailey nothing like that.”
And for a second he didn’t looked so worn out but then it was gone. Vanished like mist in the morning light. Her dad really looked tired this whole thing was taking it’s toll on both her parents.
Her mom hiccuped and covering her mouth groaning turned away, as her shoulders shook.
“Oh my god I have cancer don’t I? Is that why Leah ‘s here?” she blurted out.
My dad shook his head rubbing his eyes,
“No Hailey you don’t have Cancer. You are not dying, in fact you are the one to live,” he spoke mysteriously.
