The warm cocoon she had been lulled into merged with an unsettled hypnotic webbing of darkness that ripped away her feelings of peace. The transition was harsh and unsettling which quickly and mercilessly pulled her deeper within it’s chilling grip. Fear now held her in it’s arms.
Something cold and wet broke through her subconsciousness taking her upward to the thinly veil surface. There she heard a female voice that made her shiver and moan, cringing automatically.
“No use struggling, your pathetic fate is chosen,” the hostility in those sharpened words cut deep.
Like the person knew her and hated her.
Who ever it was pulled her arm so it twisted, jarring so much that it hurt. This was followed by a sharp prick, then a cool / burning rush through out her entire left arm.
Her arm dropped like a lead weight back to her side. A haunting laugh that made her want to run and hide was next.
Pain infiltrated her consciousness, cauliflower behind her lids changing the darkness to blotches of red.
“That should change things in our favor,” that same voice came now from far, far away.
Red bled to purple as Hailey tried not to move which caused pain to jab her entire left side.
Again voices but these were different, then she felt something gently rub her face.
“Hailey,” she heard her name spoken softly. Whoever it was came in close to her face, she could feel their breath, it smelled like seaweed. They shook her, she moaned in protest.
“Hailey,” now it was said in sing song.
She pushed against the pain tried to fight it, struggled to open her eyes and when she did she had to be hallucinating because she looked into her own eyes. Like a distorted mirror image.
She laughed, “you’re me!” Hailey tried to reach out and touch her face only her arms felt to heavy to lift.
“Hailey,” the voice now came from a long ways away.
“Look at me, stay with me Hailey,” who ever it was shook her to keep her awake.
“Something, . . . something’s not right,” her tongue felt swollen and thick.
“Yes I know,” the voice said light as air. She was suddenly lifted and her body reacted by shivering.
Why was she so cold?
Hailey next became conscious of one thing, she was in the water, her body was now weightless in the arms of the ocean. Something slippery and slick rubbed up against her underside causing her body to arch away in reaction.
She felt pressure on her chest followed by a sharp surge of energy that felt like fire.
It burst within her causing an explosion of uncomfortable heat in her chest to spread through out her limbs.
A male voice joined them, and the starry sky above her spun precariously, and she became violently sick. Time slipped, reality came back.
How she got back on shore she had no idea, but Hailey felt as if she was going to hack up a lung with each violent thrust. On and on went the upchuck motion, when finally out of pure exhaustion she collapsed passing out willingly. More voices, bright lights and then blissful nothingness.
****
The constant steady but annoying sound of the beep, beep , beep finally pricked her consciousness.
Bringing her back to the surface of reality. Hailey slowly painfully rolled her eyes, the motion was like rubbing sand under them. Even her tongue was sore, it felt thick and dry as she barely moved past her teeth, to touch upon sore cracked lips. She winced.
