"Thank you very much to the Crypt Roses, that was an incredible show!"
Such words of encouragement did little to soothe Wednesday's nerves, though she put on her best face of pale stone as she watched the conquering champions of the last act prance off the stage, to a rapturous applause from the unseen audience. The seats were packed at this latest addition to the Rave'N festivities, and Wednesday found herself regretting taking up the auditions for the Voice of Nevermore.
"I gotta hand it to you, Roomie, you're one odd girl going on a solo act on your second year here."
Enid was as she always was, somehow sneaking up on the ever watchful Wednesday in blood red stilettos and dressed like a spool of pale pink cotton candy, with a smile as saccharine sweet to fit on her face for the other girl.
"Strange, you used to call me odd for avoiding these sorts of meaningless social engagements like the plagues they are. You should be the one about to sing your kitschy little pop songs, I think I'm about to kill this pretty little party......"
Enid's little smile turned a little sour, and she had to resist the urge to do something rash, like hug this beautiful idiot.
"Oh, shut up, Roomie. Us weirdos are a little tougher than you give us, and yourself, credit for."
Wednesday wasn't taking the bait, though. Her face was as stoney in its lack of expression as it always was, but Enid had studied that pale visage for long enough to read life into its every facet. Stormy eyes, a lip curled at one end just so, and a taut grip around her dear instrument's bow and neck. No words, not a word spoken, but it was as clear as a sunny day.
Clearly, this was the time for the big guns.
Suddenly, Wednesday felt a pair of arms slide under her shoulders and wrap around her chest from either side, then, the sensation of warm breath in the crook of her neck, sending a shiver down her steel spine.
"You know, I'm just surprised you're still surprised......"
Enid's breath danced on her clammy skin, as if its heat warmed her bones. Wednesday was torn between diving deeper into those depths, or pulling herself away from them.
"Now, maybe we want to rephrase our ideas a little bit......"
She dove.
"I am going to perform a glorious Cello serenade, and at least I will enjoy it."
The clawed girl smiled, pulling the other in tight, almost purring her next words into ready ears.
"And so will I, Bestie. Even your late night solos are starting to grow on me."
From the other side of a satin curtain, shouts and cheers could be heard.
"Right, you're up. Think you can manage?"
A nod.
"Yes. I think I'll do just fine."
After all, with Enid in the wings, there was very little she couldn't do.
