"Fifty eight. Fifty nine. Sixty."
Popping my eyes open, I'm met with darkness.
Slowly, I turn around and survey my woodsy surroundings, my drying lips beginning to crack from the cold. I lick them. Icy wind glides over my body, between the cracks and slivers in my clothes, slithering over me like one of Halen's snakes and I shiver, the hairs on the back of my neck prickling up and the dampness between my legs turning a frigid, uncomfortable cold.
But the anticipation and fear rattles my bones when I'm greeted with silence and it brings the heat right back in a flash, my chest rising high.
"Halen?" The pine needles beneath my heels crunch as I rotate slowly, scanning the shadows with a pounding heart, "Halen, where are you?"
When I come full circle, my phone on the trunk of the BMW buzzes and sends my heart-rate to the moon.
Halen's name flashes on the screen.
Every rustle of wind against a tree grabs my attention and I look at every wooden trunk big enough to hide behind for a sign of him but come up with nothing.
I pick up my phone and answer it, slowly bringing it up to my ear.
"Be still. Everything's alright."
His voice is a haunting whisper and it has the opposite effect, making me turn around again in a flash, expecting him to be near.
I smile when he's not, my adrenaline doing what it does best.
"Mr. Bates, are you hiding from me? This isn't the game we agreed on."
"We did not agree on any game. Nor were there rules. You told me you wanted me to scare you. Have you had a change of heart?"
"No." I deny, "No, I haven't. I'm not chicken, and I'm not afraid of you. Not really. I just didn't think you'd go wondering off into the dark."
The line is quiet for a moment, "That makes me smile, you know that?"
I chuff, "What is with you smiling when I can't see you? I tell you I like your smile and suddenly you're determined to make sure I never lay eyes on it again. It's not fair, Halen. It's actually sort of cruel. You shouldn't keep beautiful things like that to yourself."
"I will save a smile for you later. Would that make you feel better?"
"Well...yes." I smile smugly, "Now I feel spoiled."
"I hope so."
"Mmm." I hum a laugh, "Anyways... why does that amuse you so much? Me not being a big chicken."
