Once upon a time, my comfort took precedence over what I believed in.

"Disperse or we will use force!"

I used to run when the sirens sounded.

"This protest is unsanctioned by the state of Oregon!"

I used to watch from the rooftops, a teenager, while people so much braver than me stood their ground in the streets with all the flames, and the bullets, and the smoke, and the chaos.

"This is your final warning!"

I used to admire the courage it took to put their safety on the line for the greater rehabilitation of our world.

I thought I could never do it.

"Shields up!"

Then I grew up.

I found out what sacrifice meant.

I realized that bloodshed hurts less than the guilt of watching my earth's destruction and the people and the creatures I love, suffer.

And now, I stay.

More importantly, I fight for what is right. Pain be damned.

"This is the climate revolution!" Josh's striking air horn sounds the signal at the same time that a roaring hoard of riot control comes marching toward us like soldiers, heavy feet slapping against the soggy pavement of the plaza. The unmistakable whip of wooden batons follows, like the threatening cock of a gun.

I secure the leather gloves over my hands and lace my fingers with Malia to my right, and Pitch to my left. We've done this all before. The sound of a baton has followed us to every city. We take to the streets peacefully with the same message to spread, but the fight always ends like this.
