"Hey, where are we going?"

A groggy young Mirage's eyes fluttered between opened and closed as she was piggy-backed through the empty streets of her hometown, her chin perched on the stranger's shoulder. She received no response from the man, not even an acknowledgment that he heard her, which irked the girl. So of course, she pushed further.

"Hey-"

"You are the lone survivor," he suddenly spoke, keeping his face ahead. "Everyone else is dead, including your family."

"..."

This time it was Mirage's turn to stay silent, her vision slowly adjusting to the bright and sunny day. She realized that it wasn't the exciting and bustling streets of her hometown they were walking through, but the remnants of what it was only a couple hours prior. The sidewalk that once carried so many people home was now nothing more than cracks with large rubble and debris surrounding it. Her blood ran cold.

"W-Wait, let go of me, you bitch!"

The man's eyes widened as the girl suddenly cursed at him, her personality doing a complete 180. He let out a pained grunt as she kicked and thrashed from behind him, assaulting his back as she tried to get away.

"Hold on, I'm not kidnapping you-"

"I said let me go!"

He obliged after she landed a sickening scratch to his back that most certainly tore his flesh, removing his hold on her and allowing her to fall to the ground with a thud. She yelped in surprise, not expecting him to actually listen.

It wasn't until she looked around that the situation completely dawned on her. What was once her beautiful home had become a nuclear wasteland, bombed to hell with nothing left but years of hard work smashed to smithereens. She let out a shaky, almost disbelieving sigh as she shook her head, turning her attention back to the man in front of her. This time, he was looking at her from over his shoulder.

E/C met a gentle blue-green as he gazed down upon her, his brows furrowed in... sympathy? Pity? At the time she didn't know, and as days and months passed she still had no hope that she would ever figure out the man's true feelings. That was until she grew older, until she slowly broke down the man that saved her that day and brought her to a new life. No, that man didn't pity her. He was empathetic. He, too, had felt great pain and loss before.

"Come on."

She wiped the tears from her eyes as the man reached his gloved hand out to her, a small smile that promised grand opportunities and newfound strength adorning his lips.

And so, she took it.

"WAKE! UP!"

Y/N's eyes snapped open as a screeching voice entered her ears, her pupils darting from side to side in shock. She blinked a few times, her vision blurry as her eyes fell on the dark blob that was Yuri Briar.

...that's right. Yuri Briar.

She scowled internally, her brows furrowing in confusion when she tried to open her mouth. Instead of words coming out like they should, she felt a coarse cloth between her lips, blocking her voice from reaching the boy's ears.

Her eyes widened as she looked up at him, her brows furrowing as she racked her brain. Her head was killing her, she must have hit the ground or gotten hit somehow. She could hardly remember anything. Where were they anyways?
