BARTY, EVAN, AND pandora had always struggled to balance their relationships with regulus and gracie. they never liked to be together—or near each other at all—so trying to hang out with their friends was difficult.
it was easy enough for pandora to hang out with her dorm mate, and evan and barty to hang out with regulus as they also shared a dorm, but it was difficult for the others to hang out.
not to mention regulus had quidditch and gracie tutored first years. that also had to be taken into account.
so, there so solution was to force them to be together but not really.
the group sat in the back of the library, where the biggest tables were. on the far end of the table, gracie sat and read a book. on the other side of a tall stack of books, regulus sat—of course, on the same side, just in case they made eye contact if they faced each other—also reading a book. barty, evan, and pandora, sat on the opposite side so they could see both of their friends.
"so," pandora clasped her hands together, "i want to do something for the holiday. together."
"no," gracie and regulus spoke at the same time.
"i think that is an excellent idea, dora," barty said.
"maybe we should rent out a cottage somewhere," evan nodded.
"and we'll invite belle, of course," pandora added.
"still don't want to go," they spoke again. just as synchronized as their speech, they sneered at their books.
"i mean, it's only september, so we still have time to plan," evan fiddled with the sleeve of barty's shirt.
"why don't you lot go stay at one of patel's motels," regulus stood up and began packing his things.
gracie flared her nostrils and began packing as well, "why don't you take regulus to one of his incestral, pure, dark-magic-filled ancestral manors. i'm sure you'd have fun being cursed in your sleep."
"what if we stay at someone we don't know's place, all together?" pandora offered.
"you've lost the plot if you think i'd willingly spend my time near that thing," gracie waved a hand in regulus' direction.
"that thing," he sneered without looking at her, "is centuries of pure, impeccable breeding."
"is it really pure if your parents are cousins? forty-two percent of inbred children are born with severe birth defects or have suffered early deaths. better watch out, black, don't get too close to any sick people. or the black lake. maybe you'll fall in and prove those statistics." she walked away.
"fucking statistics. i am perfectly healthy," regulus muttered as he walked away.
"well," barty said, "i think that went better than last time we tried this."
