As I skated around the ice waiting for the game to begin I thought back to the way I spoke to Evangeline and couldn't help but kick myself. I know I said that I was going to avoid her but seeing the hurt in her eyes with the tone that I used made me feel horrible.
Apparently ignoring her was going to be far harder now than it was when she was a kid. Maybe it was because every time I looked at her blood flowed south and I had to think about dead puppies so that I didn't get a hard on in public. Or maybe its because she is the only one that's ever truly challenged me, sure coach doesn't put up with my bullshit but that way Evangeline does it is different.
"What's got you frowning?" Monty skates over to me and punches my shoulder. The other team is warming up so we have time to chat before the game begins.
"Nothing I'm fine" I try to skate away from him but he just follows after me making me roll my eyes.
I've never been a big talker the whole time I've been in the club but now people see me talking with Evangeline they try and have conversations with me at every opportunity, it's draining!
He goes to open his mouth but something behind me obviously catches his attention and a smirk appears on his face.
"Didn't realise you and Evie have made it official" my eyebrows must have shot to my hairline at his comment.
"Evie is sitting in the WAG section. Unless it's not you she's here to watch" he shoots me a wink and skates off to his position as the game starts up.
I take a quick look behind me and see that Evangeline is indeed sitting in the WAG section next to Millie who has a large grin on her face. I shake off the odd feeling that has settled in my stomach and skate to the centre of the rink so that the game could start.
The game was a pretty easy one, we were playing against one of the worst teams in our division so nobody had to try very hard for us to get the win. No matter how easy the win was, everyone was buzzing as we skated off the ice and walked down to the changing rooms.
As we had all begun to strip out of our gear the door opened, expecting it just to be coach I was shocked to find Evangeline and Millie stood there with their arms linked together.
Before anyone could ask what they were doing in the room Monty spoke up and grabbed Millie's hand pulling her into the centre of the room. We all gathered around the couple and I couldn't help it as my eyes drifted over to Evangeline who was stood there was a small smile on her face. I had spent enough time with her over the past few weeks to know that the smile she had on was not a genuine one, it didn't reach her eyes so something was definitely wrong.
"So I've been keeping a secret from you guys..." Monty started and we all waited in anticipation to what he has to say.
If he was planning to say that he was retiring after this season I'd have to knock some sense into him. I looked down to Millie's hand to see if there was a ring on her finger but there wasn't so it couldn't be an engagement announcement.
