Katrina didn’t waste a second more in the house. Immediately after the men left, she went upstairs and grabbed the car keys.
She had picked up Aaron’s phone, which was left behind when the driver took him to the hospital, and had securely hidden it.
Katrina took the phone with her and headed straight to the hospital.
She didn’t need directions, it was the same hospital Aaron had taken her to when she bruised her ankle.
“Katrina, you foolish child!” On reaching the VIP ward, Katrina didn’t see the cane flying in her direction. But she dodged it on time and the cane ended up hitting the wall.
Katrina staggered and held her chest with both hands. The scene inside the VIP ward wasn’t what she had expected at all.
While Aaron lay on the bed, his parents sat on a couch in the corner, and the second couch was occupied by her parents.
It was actually Katrina’s father who had thrown the cane.
Katrina stood still as all eyes were on her. She looked from the older couples to Aaron.
Her heart twisted at the sight of him laying on the hospital bed looking pale and weak, and she covered her mouth and burst into tears.
“You hypocritic maniac!” Her father rose to his feet and grabbed her arm. “I thought you were going to keep hiding in that house forever. What is the meaning of this, Katrina? Why would you poison your husband?”
“Katrina, you’re unbelievable.” Her mother sobbed from where she sat on the couch. “We thought you would come back to your senses and quit that nonsense. Why are you so stubborn? Look what you have done. You have brought shame to your father, you have brought shame to this family.”
Katrina didn’t break out of her shock until her father’s grip tightened around her arm. His fingers dug into her skin and pain shot through her arm.
“Dad, please stop it.” She sobbed and held her abdomen. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know-- I didn’t know that-”
“You didn’t know that what?” her father cut her off. “We warned you, Katrina. We told you to let go of your stupid assumptions. I am not going to stop, I am going to break your arm today. No, I am going to kill you. Because even if I leave you alone, these people are not going to let you go.” He glowered at her and pointed to Aaron’s parents. “They are going to put you in your right place, you heartless woman.”
Katrina didn’t dare to look at Aaron’s parents’ faces. She was ashamed to do that.
And despite wanting the punishment, she was afraid too. She was afraid that not only her life would be put in danger.
“Let me see him please, Dad.” She begged while her eyes darted to the bed. “I want to see Aaron, I must tell him something important.”
“Whatever you want to tell him, you can do that in jail.” for the first time, Aaron’s father spoke up. His anger was on par with the fury in Katrina’s father’s eyes. “Fortunately, he is asleep right now. We can take you away and no one is going to save you.”
Katrina knew her parents wouldn’t save her. They had warned her and she didn’t listen.
But she just wanted to speak with Aaron even once. she would endure whatever decision he made after that.
“Mr. Jack.” She struggled out of her father’s grip and scurried to where Aaron’s father sat. “Please give me some time, let me speak with him. After that, you can do whatever you want.”
“And what exactly do you want to tell him?” Aaron’s mother glared at her.
“Whatever you say will be of no use, Katrina.” Her mother shook her head and sighed heavily. “Just accept your faith.”
“But I love Aaron, Mum!” Katrina sobbed. “I have always loved him. And I’m so sorry for accusing him of having a hand in Cassie’s death,” she turned to Aaron’s parents and said. “I want to apologize to Aaron. I know I don’t deserve his forgiveness, but please let me apologize.”
Aaron’s parents weren’t willing to listen to her and her own parents didn’t want to back her up. Katrina sobbed uncontrollably until her throat ached, and she watched helplessly as Aaron’s father brought out his phone and summoned the securities.
Was this it?
Katrina’s hand went to her stomach and a foreboding feeling occupied her chest. Was she never going to have the chance to tell Aaron this important news?
If she went to jail like this, in this state, there was no way she was going to survive. His parents were sending her to her death and she had asked for it.
“Father.”
Suddenly, a weak voice sounded in the room. It was almost inaudible.
Katrina’s head snapped to the bed and she gasped. Aaron was staring back at her. He seemed to have just woken up. Or had he been awake all this time?
“Aaron.” Katrina left her kneeling position and hurried up.
But before she could proceed to the bed, Aaron’s mother blocked her path. “Where do you think you’re going?” she spat out.
“Enough with this foolishness, Katrina,” her father commanded. “Stop this drama and follow them out.”
Three security men were already in the room ready to take her out.
“What are you waiting for?” Aaron’s father hollered at the securities. “Seize her this instant.”
“No.” Aaron’s voice came from the bed once more. “Leave her alone, Father.” his voice was still weak, barely audible.
“Leave her alone?” His mother exclaimed. “Do you know what you’re saying, Son? This woman fed you poison for speaking out loud.”
“Just leave her.” Aaron was struggling to speak. “Let her come… and… leave us alone.”
His weak command rendered Katrina speechless and fresh tears left her eyes.
And without further arguments, his parents as well as her parents gave her disapproving looks before storming out of the ward.
