I cast a shadow on you,
Melanin is power.
Melanin is strong foundations,
in those skyscrapers that cast shadows on you.
We are black, brown, coffee colored, and sometimes blue.
We are albinos with red eyes and white curly hair,
We are the abominations of people like you.
Even though we still bleed the same blood,
We are not the same.
Ran to the islands and states now stereotyped for us living there.
Keeps you outsiders from a weekend vacation,
Or keeps you coming for the excitement of a different color.
A circus as you claim us, built from slavery, and oppression,
Now to entertainment, and somehow still at the service of the lighter skinned.
We are not some story for the media when we can't breathe.
We are not a stereotype of the ghetto dumb things for humanity.
We are not something to blame when your store gets stolen.
We are not the hood or the hooded.
We are not the sagged, or ghetto
We were the lynched and oppressed,
so we became the dictators and policemen.
We were told not to speak, so we advocate.
We were told we couldn't, so we did.
That is why melanin is power.
It casts shadows on what you think you've made in your life.
Melanin makes us better for it.
Melanin lets us hold the history in our skin and color with pride,
and helps us to forgive the trespasses of you.
Melanin is power.
