I waited in the cold air, sitting on top of my black Toyota Celica. The sun was setting, and was practically gone below the horizon.
I sighed and sniffed, pulling my sleeves further over my cold fingers. I reach back and pull my hood over my head, trying to keep warm against the bitter cold air.
My hope began fading as the last rays of sunlight began to disappear. I shook my head, the sadness beginning to set in. I fiddled with the hem of my hoodie awkwardly.
My eyes glance around the empty field, and I even steal a glance back at the emptier parking lot. i glance back down at the grass below me, and turn my face back to the darkening sky.
Behind me, I hear the sound of tires on the pavement, then the slam of a car door. I don't even turn my face back to see who it is, I know already. I just keep my eyes down at my hands, the tips of my fingers red from the cold.
There is the sound of shoes crunching in the grass, and Aaron appears beside me, his hands resting on the hood of my car. I finally turn to look at him.
"I am so sorry, Luna, I seriously didn't mean it, I swea-" he starts to ramble on.
But here's the thing, this wasn't the first time he has been late to our dates.
"No, Aaron," I cut him off, and he looks at me with wide eyes, anticipating what I will say. I climb off of the hood of the car, rubbing my frozen nose with my jacket as I walked around to the front seat. I unlock the car, and open the door, turning to Aaron, as he watches me, his hands still on the car.
"I'm used to it," i start to get in the car, stumbling to find the keys somewhere in my jacket pocket with my numb fingers.
"Luna, no," Aaron says, calmly walking over to the door and opening it before I can even close it all the way, "I've been caught up with college and crap."
I look up into his eyes, so beautiful, as he pleads with me.
I know i shouldn't be mad at him. It was his first year of college, and he was trying really hard to be there for me with my racing and trying to juggle schoolwork at the same time.
I turn my eyes to the interior of my car, thinking it over and biting my lip.
"Let me make it up to you, please," he says, reaching over and grabbing my hand on the steering wheel.
"Okay," I tell him, turning the car off, "I'm just over reacting."
Aaron smiles, helping me out of the car. As soon as we are both out, he turns his attention to the now fully dark sky. Stars dotted the darkness.
"Now we can stargaze," he says, and i lean back so my head rested on his chest. I look up at the sky, smiling nonstop.
"Yeah," I say, my smile starting to fade a little, "we can..."
