I sat at home, watching Netflix in my sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt. My hair was tied up in a messy bun, and a bowl of popcorn sat in my lap. It was late, almost midnight.
I hear the door open, and I turn to face the door curiously. I see a dark figure walk in, taking off a jacket and hanging it on the coat rack. The silhouette walks closer to me, until i can tell who it is by the light of the TV screen.
"Hey dad," I say, smiling a cheesy smile up at him. He smiles at me, and by the look of his suit and tie, I can tell he just got in from a late night at work.
"Hey Luna," he says, loosening his tie as he takes a seat on the couch beside me. I pause Pretty Little Liars on Netflix, turning my attention to my dad, "how was going to the race track?"
He has an excited smile on his face, actually caring about me. I smile at him, thinking about the big track, the stadium around it, the garages and training tracks, etc.
"It was a dream come true," I say, looking at him. He patted my shoulder gently, a proud smile on his face.
"I'm glad," he says, starting to get up.
I watch him as he gets to his feet. He makes his way to the stairs, tiredly.
My mind races about what happened today, especially seeing the new race car. I thought of the words Aaron said to me, and about what I even said. Was i really ready for this? Would this change everything? My friendships? My family? My relationship with Aaron?
"Dad?" I say, acting on my impulses.
He stops on the last stair and turns to me, hand on the railing. He flicks his eyebrows upwards, signalling for me to go on.
"Do you think me taking this opportunity will change things? For worse?" I ask, hesitating on the last few words.
He shakes his head immediately.
"I highly doubt that," he says, before finishing making his way up the stairs.
I watch until the door to him and my mom's room shuts after him, and then i turn my attention to the remote in my hand.
I'm sure everything will be fine, I tell myself, turning back on my show.
