May 12 was a day of celebration in the Miller household. As midnight struck, Cooper officially turned 13, greeted by the gentle nudge of his mother, Abby Lee Miller, stirring him from his sleep. Blinking away drowsiness, he found Abby standing beside his bed, a warm smile on her face.
"Happy Birthday, sweetheart," Abby said fondly, leaning down to kiss him on the forehead and pulling him into a hug.
"Thanks, Mom," Cooper replied, his voice slightly deeper now that he was officially a teen. It was a tradition for Abby to be the first to wish him a happy birthday at the stroke of midnight.
"I can already hear the teenage voice coming through," Abby chuckled, causing Cooper to laugh along with her. "Later today, we'll hit Navy Pier and then have a birthday dinner at the Signature Room with all your favorites."
"Sounds awesome."
By 8:50 am, Cooper had risen and readied himself for the day ahead. Sporting a Chicago T-shirt, track pants, and Converse Chuck Taylors, he pulled his long hair back into a ponytail before heading to the kitchen.
"Happy Birthday, Cooper!" greeted Maryen, his grandmother, enveloping him in a hug.
"Thanks, Grandma."
Their bichon frise, Broadway Baby, barked happily, as if adding his own birthday wishes to the mix.
"Broadway Baby says Happy Birthday," Abby translated with a grin.
"Thanks, Baby," Cooper chuckled, patting the fluffy dog's head before they all sat down for breakfast.
At 2:30 pm, Abby and Cooper made their way downstairs, caught a Chicago CTA bus to Navy Pier, arriving 15 minutes later. Navy Pier dazzled with its attractions—the Ferris Wheel, Wave Swinger, and the promise of a Tall Ship Windy cruise.
"First up, Wave Swinger. Ready?" Abby asked as they strolled through the pier's bustling activities.
"Let's do it," Cooper agreed eagerly.
They navigated through Crystal Gardens and Pier Park until Cooper found himself in line for the Wave Swinger. Abby watched with amusement as he boarded and waved before the ride spun them high above Navy Pier.
Afterward, they boarded the Tall Ship Windy for a scenic cruise on Lake Michigan. Cooper even got to help raise the sail, a wide grin on his face as he soaked in the experience beside his mother.
"Enjoying your birthday?" Abby asked during the sail.
"It's been amazing," Cooper replied, snapping photos of the skyline.
Back on solid ground three hours later, they caught the bus back home, riding up to their condo's 95th floor. As they stepped out of the elevator, a chorus of voices erupted:
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COOPER!"
Surprised, Cooper found himself surrounded by familiar faces: Maryen, Chloe, Brooke, Paige, Nia, their moms, Gianna, and a host of others from Abby Lee Dance Company. Birthday decorations adorned the room, and a cake awaited with "Happy 13th, Coop Troop!" written in frosting.
"I didn't expect this!" Cooper admitted, touched by the outpouring of love.
"We all planned it," Abby grinned proudly. "And we've got the Signature Room booked just for you."
After blowing out his candles and opening presents, Cooper sat at a table, chatting with Brooke and Payton about sports as they nibbled on cake.
"I'm still bummed about the Blackhawks," Cooper sighed.
"Me too," Payton commiserated.
The conversation turned to the Bulls' upcoming game, their hopes riding high on a potential championship.
Meanwhile, Mackenzie and her friend Brookie approached Abby with a question about baseball stadiums, engaging in a lively debate about Wrigley Field versus US Cellular Field.
As the evening wound down and guests departed, Abby, Cooper, and Maryen returned to their apartment, reminiscing about the memorable day.
