On the upcoming Saturday, Cooper was in the living room enjoying some fruit and a glass of low-fat milk while watching Comcast SportsNet Chicago (now NBC Sports Chicago). Meanwhile, Abby, Gianna, the moms, and girls were in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the DanceTroupe competition. Accompanying the 13-year-old were Hollie and Brookie, who were keeping an eye on him, and the time was 1:00 PM.
"Coop, question," Brookie addressed Abby's son. "Are the Blackhawks playing tonight?"
"Yes, they're up against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes hail from Raleigh, North Carolina, which is an hour and 14 minutes' drive from Greensboro," Cooper replied. "Did you know they were originally the Hartford Whalers from Connecticut?"
"Wow, I had no idea."
"It's true," Hollie added.
Later that night, around 11:00 PM, Cooper had been asleep in his bedroom for about 15 minutes when he was awakened by the sound of his door opening. It was Abby, returning from the competition.
"Sorry, Coop, I didn't mean to wake you," Abby apologized.
"It's okay, Mom," Cooper reassured her. "How did DanceTroupe go?"
"Maddie took 1st in the Pre-Junior Soloist Division, Chloe won the Junior Soloist Division, Nia came in 4th, and Kendall didn't place. The group dance won 1st, but their performance was sloppy, and I had a disagreement with Kelly. Brooke, however, showed significant improvement, and Nia was confused on stage," Abby recounted.
"The girls need to pull together, even though they won the first competition of the new season."
"They certainly do," Abby concurred. "Now, get some sleep."
"Alright."
After leaving her son's room, Cooper drifted back to sleep.
The following day, Sunday, Abby prepared some plain pasta and mashed potatoes for Cooper, who was gazing out the living room window to the west at 3:00 pm when the doorbell sounded.
"I'll get it," Cooper said, heading to the door to find Gianna, the girls, and their mothers. "Hey, everyone."
After hugs and greetings, they entered and Abby handed Cooper his plate of food, which he placed on a folding table while sitting on the couch.
"How are you feeling, Coop?" inquired Maddie.
"Improving with each day," he replied.
"That's wonderful," Nia commented.
"Indeed," Chloe concurred.
"We miss you at the competitions!" Mackenzie declared.
"And I miss watching you all dance, but mom keeps me updated," Cooper responded.
"She certainly does," Gianna affirmed.
"Perhaps once you're fully recovered, we can visit Water Tower Place like old times," Brooke proposed.
"That sounds excellent, Brooke," Cooper agreed with his girlfriend.
"When's your next check-up for your recovery?" Melissa questioned.
"Next Monday," Cooper informed.
"I bet you'll be back on your feet in no time," Kelly speculated.
"Absolutely," Christi and Holly echoed.
"You might be surprised; I could reach full recovery sooner than expected."
"He very well might," Abby assured the group.
"Kendall, have you and your mom ever been to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee?" Cooper queried Kendall and Jill.
"Yes, we have," Kendall confirmed.
