Mika's POV
For a mother who's walked into her daughter covered in her husband's blood whom she murdered only a few hours ago, I found myself rationally calm.
The situation was less than practical, but I knew that things at home wouldn't continue the way they were going forever. Sunako was adapting, evolving. That much was evident in the way she handled her fathers daily beatings. Each day when I came home, I saw less fear etched on her face; I don't even think the pain bothered her anymore after the first week. I only saw a silent resolve, a meek acceptance, that of which I wasn't even sure she understood herself. Which is why, when I came home - later than usual - on the day of Sunako's birthday, I knew right away, that she had finally ended her suffering.
It's not that I hate my daughter, I merely don't love her anymore. Some may say that makes me a bad mother, I find that it makes me a proactive citizen. She's not herself anymore, the second she manifested more than one quirk, the quirks she claimed with blood on her hands, she became otherworldly, a threat to society. As a hero, I couldn't stand for it. I wouldn't. Though as her parent, I knew I couldn't abandon her, nor could I hand her into the higher ups. How would it look on me if I gave my child away to be used for experimentation? I'd lose my social standing, my image abolished. I let Yuri have his way with her; though I got over the initial shame of bringing a monster into this world, my husband never quite recovered; in fact, it drove him into madness. He resigned from his hero work, or rather, I told the office that he was on temporary leave due to Sunako's schooling troubles. She never started school, as it was the summer before her first year when the Jerry Hilton incident started this hell. I had to go to work, otherwise suspicions would raise over the absence of both my husband and daughter. Leaving Sunako to Yuri, I hoped, despite everything, that she'd see that we did it for her. So she may be rid of the plague running through her blood, and understand that we had a place in the hero hierarchy, no matter how far down, and that we needed to uphold it. At any cost.
None of that matters now, not when we're far from home. In Musutafu, a state in Japan thriving in an economy largely centred around the development of heros. Here, she may have an opportunity to use her powers for good, only it must never come to light how she obtained such quirks. It would ruin me. I would return back home of course, she would manage by herself. She always has.
The airport is bustling with tourists and residents of the state, people of all strange types and sizes situated as bodyguards at all corners of the busy buildings. I readjust Sunako, her drugged body limp and motionless in my arms. Suitcase in my other hand, I scan through the crowd, looking for an exit. Following a ray of light, I squeeze through clusters of people, muttering apologies as I find the door leading to what I hope is a bright future for the child in my arms. I was an arms reach away from the exit when a man-dog stops me, arm outreached in front of me, blocking my way.
"Excuse me ma'am, but I've received some concern from bystanders about the condition of the child in your arms. Those who were on the same plane as you say that she was unconscious the whole flight. Can you confirm she is your child?"
My pulse quickened, my eyes veering towards the door then back at the officers bleek face.
"This is my daughter sir, Sunako Kaida. I have both our passports here. As for her current state, I've given her sleeping medication as she is quite a restless child and can't stay in one position for long without throwing a tantrum. I simply had the other passengers best interests at heart." The lie comes easily, fluent enough that he should have no trouble believing me.
