Yusuf's POV:

CW: not in a self harming way, but Yusuf kinda bites himself to calm down sometimes. It's a pain-seeking stim.

Yesterday was painful. It was just waiting to fall asleep so today would come quicker. I can finally escape my father, right after school. Maybe even during school so I can miss a few lessons.

"Amir, are you packed for Mama?"

"Yes. Why can't you live with her too?"

"She's not my Mama, she's yours. Anyways, I'm getting placed with Mr Farouk, so I'm happy. We can still talk to each other, I'll still come round and see you guys."

"You don't know that."

"Yes I do. He told me."

"You can't trust whatever he says. He's not Jesus."

"No, because Jesus was Jewish, like us. Mr Farouk is an atheist."

"Are you still going to practise and all?"

"Of course I will. It's important."

"Will I see you again? Today I mean?"

"Maybe. I'll call Mama either way."

Amir gave me a nod before clasping his arms round my shoulders.

"I love you Yusuf."

"I love you too Mimi. Get dressed. Stop crying on my shirt, it's new. I spent forty minutes trying to iron it yesterday."

He nodded and let me walk out of our room. We'd only shared it for five months. It still felt like longer though. Amir never really had to share before my momma died, he's the only boy of his biological siblings. I don't think he minded either way, we used to share part time whenever my dad would insist on seeing me for a weekend every month or so. He says he likes having older brothers. I like having younger siblings. It works out perfectly.

I think Yas knew what was happening. We've told her she was going to live with Mama for a bit but had tactfully forgotten to mention I wouldn't stay with her too. She had pretty much caught on by this point.

"I'll take you to school, and Mama will put you to bed tonight. That's great, isn't it?"

She whined against me pulling her dress over her head.

"Come on, I'll see you soon baby."

"Mama."

"Yeah, you're going home with Mama. After school though."

"Mama!"

"Yeah! Mama, after school, that's why all your stuff is in the bags, for Mama's house."

She just carried on babbling about her mama, which is normal. I knew she'd take a few days to get used to living with her again but she'd love every minute of it.

I dropped them off at school before walking to my own. This time tomorrow, I'd be going to school with Mr Farouk.

I was early, only by five minutes. I walked into Mr Farouk's classroom and found him staring at his phone.

"Hi sir."

"You're staying with me." He whispered, his eyes not moving from his phone.

"What?"

"The social worker is coming tonight- this afternoon, she's going to take you to my house. You're going to stay with me."

"I'm staying with you?"

"Yes."

Something in me, a knot in my stomach released itself following that sentence. I had been terrified the whole morning. The whole week actually, but now I don't need to be scared. I have Mr Farouk.
