Lily's fear of the ocean came rushing back in an instant when the lifeboat got stuck within 5 feet of hitting the water. "I've got slip her." Harold said to no one in particular. "What does that mean?" A woman asked, holding her daughter to her side. Harold grabbed a knife from a seaman and cut the ropes off the boat, causing the boat to fall the rest of the way to the water. Lily toppled over with a groan in reaction to the impact. The passengers became wet with water that splashed into the boat, making everyone more cold. Harold gently grabbed her and helped her sit up. "You're okay, love." He muttered to her before ordering the men to start rowing. "How far, sir?" A man asked as he rowed. "I want to lay off from the ship but stay as near as possible. Make it easier for us to pick anybody up that may come along." Harold responded.

"Is this officer daft? They've left our lives in the hands of a fool." A middle age woman complained. Lily recognized her as Charlotte Collyer, an acquaintance of her Mother. "Are you saying you can do better? Please, do show us, Mrs. Collyer." Lily barked at the woman in Harold's defense. The woman looked disapprovingly at Lily, but didn't say another word. Harold conspicuously laid his hand on Lily's back to calm her down, knowing how scared she must be. Harold remained on alert as the boat rowed about 150 yards away from the sinking vessel. Lily couldn't take her eyes away from the horrific sight. The head of the ship was now underwater and the first smoke funnel was starting to sink. "Keep pulling, men! We must get away from the suction." Harold ordered. The boat rocked from side to side in the water, causing Lily's stomach to churn. Lily tried taking deep breathes but it only seemed to make things worse. "I'm going to be sick." Lily mumbled before leaning over the side of the boat and throwing up everything in her stomach. "Someone give this woman a blanket!" Harold commanded. He felt awful that Lily was going through this but he knew she was in for a long night. He had caught word earlier from Lightoller that a rescue ship was still four hours away.

Harold didn't even mind when Lily laid her head on his knee once she was done getting sick. He noticed that other passengers were taking notice but worst case scenario, he would say she passed out and he wasn't going to just push her off of him. Time felt as if it had frozen. The only thing they had to do in the boat was watch as the ship sank lower and lower into the ocean. Lily wrapped the blanket tight around her body and took her hands to cover her ears, attempting to drown out the sound of the shrieks coming from the ship. All Lily could think about was John on the ship, fighting for survival. She hoped that just maybe he found a boat that was letting men on and was able to row away to safety. Harold wished he could do more for Lily in that moment but he also had 57 other passengers he was responsible for. Harold took the chance to look around to see what else he could see through the darkness. He caught sight of four other boats floating nearby, watching the same spectacle they were. Harold called out to each boat who was in charge and if they had an officer with them. Each boat answered back to him that they had no officers on board with them.
