Chapter 3

( A/n: This Chapter takes place a week before the realm queen's death. )

Merletta found herself in one of her repeating dreams, it was one of Gloreth. She watched with shame as young Gloreth was pointing a wooden sword at a little girl with long red hair as the village was in flames. Merletta was standing beside the girl with long red hair as Merletta was looking at Gloreth with tears in her eyes.

Merletta: ( to Gloreth, even though she can't hear her: ) Please... Stop this... Why must you do this...?

Gloreth: ( to the little girl: ) Go back to the shadows from once you came.

Merletta: I...said... STOP!!!

Merletta then woke up in her room, in a cold sweat. She took a few breaths to calm herself, before getting out of bed and getting ready for the day like nothing happened.

( A few hours later, at the training grounds )

Merletta was watching the captain of the royal guard training some new knights, when a small kenku child ( a crow-like humanoid creature ) wearing ragged clothing climbed over the fence and jumped at one of the dummies, knocking it to the ground, with a toy dagger in their hand, Merletta had an impressed expression on her face as she watched the small kenku child tried to stab the dummy with the toy knife. One of the minotaur Monstruonian knights then came in and picked the kenku up from the ground by the back of their shirt, causing the kenku child to become scared and panicked. Merletta then quickly walked to the scene and used her magic to teleport the small kenku child to her side, now that Merletta had a closer look at the young kenku, she saw that the kenku looked to be no older than four years old. The kenku child hid behind Merletta, hugging her arm.

Merletta: ( to the Minotaur knight: ) Shame on you, sir. Don't you know that is no way to treat a child?

Minotaur Monstruonian knight: My apologies, Lady Merletta, but she-

Merletta: I am aware that she snuck here, we all saw her climb over the fence. That doesn't mean you can pick her up like she's a criminal. She could be lost.

Captain of the Royal Guard: Lady Merletta is right. Five laps around the castle, now.

The minotaur nods his head and walked off. Merletta then looked at the captain with a serious expression.

Merletta: I'll take care of the kenku, you continue with the training.

Captain of the Royal Guard: ( bows to Merletta  ) Yes, my lady.

Merletta then led the kenku child to inside the castle and to the closest room, which was one of the castle's libraries. She sat the kenku child down and makes a pencil and notebook appear out of nowhere with her magic and hands it to the child.

Merletta: ( calmly, to the kenku child: ) How old are you, what's your name?

The kenku child wrote something down and showed it to Merletta, it said " Four. My name is Wren. "

Merletta: Why did you come here? Aren't your parents looking for you? They must be worried sick.

Wren then wrote down something in the notebook and showed it to Merletta, it said " Want to become a knight. I have no parents. " Merletta's heart sank a little when Wren told her that she didn't have parents, but then she had an idea.
