"I've got to make a phone call," Calvin says before hurrying off to the bedroom and closing the door behind him.
First he makes a strange comment about his therapy not going well and now he rushes off to the bedroom to make a private phone call? I thought he was starting to be honest with me again but it's clear to me now that he has to be hiding something. I'm not going to let it go on for long this time. I'm sick of it. This has to end today.
I hop up from the couch as soon as the bedroom door closes behind him and follow his trail. With my ear presses against the door, I listen closely to every word, curious as to what he might be hiding this time. I'm sure it has something to do with finding his brother's killer but I have to be sure before I confront him about it.
"I don't know if you should go to that party tonight," Calvin says from the other side of the door.
I can't hear who he's on the phone with but the word 'party' has already got me a bit confused.
"I just don't have a good feeling about it. I don't want anything bad to happen to you," Calvin says to the mysterious person on the phone.
Part of me wants to just barge in the room right now and demand to know who he's talking to but I know that won't get me anywhere. I'll have more to go off of if I can figure out who he's talking to.
"I know we don't get along but you're still my sister and I don't want to see you turn up dead in a ditch," Calvin says in a way that lets me know he's getting annoyed.
Bingo, he's talking to his sister. But why? He had told me she wasn't able to help him when he asked her about Gavin. If that were the case, he wouldn't have any reason to talk to her. I doubt they've turned over a new leaf and decided to work on their relationship. He would've told me about that.
"Look I can't say," Calvin says and then takes a brief pause. "I just want to make sure you'll be careful tonight."
Be careful tonight? A party? What the hell are they talking about? More importantly, what are they planning?
"I wasn't being weird," Calvin says defensively. There's another pause before he says, "Whatever, just let me know the location as soon as you get there," and then it goes silent inside the room.
I figure he's hung up by now but just in case, I open the door quietly. He shoves his phone in his pocket and then turns around. It's clear by the expression on his face that he wasn't expecting to see me standing right behind him. Good, I've already caught him off guard. I thought things were getting better this week but now I find out he's just been lying to me this whole time. Well, it has to end now.
"What was that about?" I ask him casually, hoping he'll just come clean and tell me the truth.
"Oh, I forgot to make another appointment when I left today, so I was just doing that really quick," Calvin says, taking a few steps towards me.
"Bullshit!" I blurt out as if it was some natural reflex. Having him blatantly lie directly to my face is something I won't stand for. He's going to tell me the truth even if I have to pry it out of him. "I know you were talking to your sister. So, what were you talking about?"
"What? Were you just standing there listening the whole time?" He asks defensively, as if he's the victim in this situation.
"It doesn't matter, Calvin! I want you to quit lying to me and tell me the truth. What were you two talking about?" I ask demandingly.
"I can't just leave it alone, okay?" Calvin says loudly.
"What are you talking about? Leave what alone?" I ask him. Of course he couldn't just answer my question directly. I won't let him wiggle his way out of this one.
"The case! Cameron! Gavin! All of it! I can't just leave it alone. I have to find him!" Calvin says, his voice now at a yelling volume.
"Calvin, it's not your job. Why can't you just let them do their job?" I ask him with a lower voice. Maybe if I lower my voice, he'll stop screaming too. The last thing I want is the neighbors to call the police.
"Because it's my responsibility," Calvin shoots back. "I should've never gotten him involved in this. But I did, and now I have to make it right."
"Is that what you were talking to Christina about? She's helping you, isn't she?" I ask him, demanding I get an answer this time.
Calvin sighs and rubs his forehead as if trying to prevent a headache.
"Tell me," I demand.
"Yes!" Calvin says, throwing his arms out wide. "She's helping me track down Gavin."
"That's what the party is about? Gavin's going to be there?" I ask him, trying to understand everything.
"Yes, Christina is going to some secret party that Gavin is hosting and she's going to send me the location when she gets there," Calvin finally admits.
"You can't go there. You're going to get yourself hurt. Hell, you'll get yourself killed," I warn him.
"I have to finish this. I have to put an end to all of this. I can't live in peace knowing that he's still out there," Calvin tells me with so much intensity in his voice it scares me a bit.
"What's that supposed to mean? You have to finish this? What are you going to do, kill him?" I ask him. I definitely can't let him go if he's made plans to kill him. He'll just get himself put in jail and then what good will really have come out of it?
"I can't deal with this right now. I'm done talking about this," Calvin says, pushing past me to get out of the room.
I expect him to go towards the front door but he heads to the basement instead. Part of me wants to follow him and convince him to call this whole thing off but I know that nothing I say will change his mind. He's too determined, which is why I have to take a different course of action.
The sounds of his video games drift up the stairs as I grab my purse off of the kitchen table. At least he won't hear me leave, it's better if he doesn't know where I'm going. I slip out the front door and get in my car, pulling away before Calvin has a change to notice.
I can't believe he's been lying to me this whole time, even after he agreed to get professional help. It seemed like things were slowly getting better. I guess his appointment today didn't help at all because he still had the nerve to lie straight to my face. Well, if he's going to continue lying to me, then I think I have the right to do something behind his back as well. If only for his own good.
My car stops on the side of the street, next to a sign that lets me know I'm on borrowed time until I get towed. I get out of my car quickly, unintentionally slamming the door behind me as I cross the street and make my way into the police station.
"I need to talk to Captain Bennett," I tell the receptionist, giving her no room to object.
