"This isn't you. You're not a killer. Just put the gun down, Calvin. Please don't do this," I say, pleading with my brother.
The last thing I want is for my brother to get arrested for murder and be put away for the rest of his life. All because of some low-life drug dealer. I thought maybe if I pointed a gun at him that it might knock some sense into him but I've had no luck with that so far. He still seems set on putting a bullet into Gavin no matter how much I beg and plead for him not to do it.
Captain Bennett was very adamant on how he wanted this undercover mission to go. I was to get on Gavin's good side, get close to him, and figure out who he all had working with him. Well, that got difficult really quick because once Calvin started getting involved with things, Gavin began keeping me in the dark about most things, making it really hard for me to get the information I needed to report back to Captain Bennett. Then Calvin showed up and everything just went to shit. I'd at least like to be able to bring Gavin in though, and have him locked up for everything he's done.
I don't want to shoot my brother, but I also don't want anyone else to die.
"I'm sorry," Calvin says to me, looking me right in the eye. "I just can't let him go."
Calvin looks back down to Gavin and pulls his trigger. I don't know if it was the sudden loud noise that made me do it or if it was the fact that I was trying to prevent him from killing someone, but I shut my eyes and squeezed the trigger at the same time as Calvin.
Blood from Gavin splatters across the room and gets on my clothes as his body falls to the floor. I lower my gun as the tears begin to well up in my eyes. I look up and make eye contact with Calvin who looks shocked. Blood is beginning to seep out of his shirt from where my bullet connected. He drops his gun as he looks down at the blood. The bullet landed right in the center of his chest. Calvin stumbles backwards a few steps before collapsing to the floor.
I toss my gun to the side and take one step towards him before the front door bursts open.
"Everybody down on the ground!" An officer yells as he rushes into the house, followed by three more uniformed men.
I drop to my knees before realizing that one of the men is Captain Bennett. He's the last one in the house and freezes as soon as he sees the mess.
"Holy shit," Captain Bennett mutters under his breath.
The other three officers are spread out along the wall, holding  riffles in my direction. I guess it makes sense, given that I'm the only one without a bullet in them. My hands are held high in the air until Captain Bennett orders the other officers to lower their weapons. I rush to Calvin's side and find him staring wide eyed at the ceiling.
"Get an ambulance here!" I shout towards Captain Bennett. "He needs help!"
Captain Bennett pulls out his phone while the other officers check on Gavin and Olivia. It's no use, there's no way either of them could've survived their injuries. All I can hope for is that Calvin survives his, even if it is my fault.
"Calvin, look at me, stay with me," I tell him, grasping his face and turning him towards me.
He looks right at me and I can see the fear through his tears.
"I'm sorry," I say as the tears begin to roll down my own cheeks. "Please stay with me, stay with me. You've gotta make it through this."
"I'm sorry," Calvin says in a soft whisper.
"No, I'm sorry. Just please stay with me, you have to make it through this," I tell him.
A single tear rolls down the side of Calvin's face as he stares into my eyes. "I love you little brother," he says softly.
"No, no, no, we're not saying goodbye, you're going to make it through this," I say through the tears. "Get a fucking ambulance here now!" I shout at Captain Bennett again.
"It's already on the way," Captain Bennett assures me.
"Hurry!" I yell as if they have any control over how fast they get here.
Calvin lifts his hand and places it on my arm, pulling my attention back to him."We'll always have each other," he says with a long exhale.
I grab his hand with my own and clutch it tightly. "When everything else is gone," I manage to get out before I start producing too many tears to talk.
Calvin manages to produce a weak smile before he lets out one final breath and his eyes drift shut. I can feel the grip leave his hand as the life leaves his body. I hunch over next to him and let the tears flow out of me, still holding his hand in my own.
"I love you," I mutter into the floor.
I feel a hand on my back and look up to see Captain Bennett standing over me.
"I'm sorry. I never intended for things to end this way," he tells me.
When I agreed to take on this mission, I never imagined things would end up this way either. I guess we were both taken by surprise. One of us just happened to lose a lot more than the other though. Captain Bennett lost one of his former officers. Meanwhile, I lost my brother.
Through the blinds, I can see the red and blue lights flashing outside. Within a few seconds, there's medical personnel flooding into the house. The officer's step to the side, getting out of their way while Captain Bennett pulls me to the side. I reluctantly go with him, knowing there's nothing I can do for Calvin now. He made his choice, even if it was a poor one, and I made mine. Now I have to live with it.
The medics check the pulse on every body lying on the floor and receive negative results for every single one. Then they leave the house and return seconds later with a gurney. They load Olivia's body up first, zipping her up in a long black bag. Then they return for Gavin and do the same with him.
While they're loading him in the ambulance, I make my way back over to Calvin and crouch down next to him.
"I'm sorry it ended like this. This is never what I wanted. I just wanted to do some good in this dark world," I whisper to him. "Now it seems like everything else is gone, but I know you'll always still be with me."
The medics return with another gurney accompanied by a black bag and I step aside as they begin to do their jobs.
"I love you brother," I whisper as they zip the bag shut.
The medics roll him out of the house atop the gurney, leaving me with nothing but memories of him. The tears begin to roll out again and Captain Bennett puts his arm around me.
"I'm sorry," he whispers, and then gives me a light squeeze. "Let's get you home."
