I just looked at Roger as he shook his head. The new bull had arrived, and it was just standing there as Roger had a thermometer in his ass. I had never seen a bull take a physical as well as this one. He was the most even-tempered bull I had ever met. He was placid, and quiet, and ran away from the cows.
"He is only young," Roger said, trying to convince me that in time he would get meaner. It wasn't like I wanted a difficult bull. But at least one that needed a crush or had a little bit of attitude. You wanted a bull that would scare away the wildlife and strangers that might come onto the property.
"I am going to call him Daffodil," Grace said, she was also standing in the paddock. Normally I wouldn't let anyone in there, but Daffodil didn't do anything. Grace had a hard brush and was brushing him down as she did with all the cows. Daffodil seemed to be enjoying the activity, rubbing his head into it, and against Grace. I looked around making sure that Logan couldn't see. He had given her strict instructions to stay out of the bullpen.
I saw Grace in a different light now. Elisa told me about her past. About what Grace had done for her. How Grace had protected her, taking the abuse of their mother, and ensuring that Elisa had a good childhood. I admired Grace's bravery and conviction. It was nice to see the connection the sisters had; it was similar to what I had with my brothers. I knew that not all families had that kind of connection. It had been over two weeks since I had that talk with Samara's parents. Elisa hadn't seen her, and I'd heard nothing. We both took the time to look at Inner Bear, from the studies Elisa saw and the reports from other families. It seemed like a good place, illegitimate with the ability to help female bear shifters reconnect with their family. I could understand why Walt and Isla wanted to get her into the program.
Even though we hadn't heard anything from Samara I knew that she was watching. Elisa seemed to like talking about Samara. She would ask me questions about our childhood together and talk about Inner Bear and ways to get her there. She would only because annoyed when I micromanaged her life. I had been driving Elisa everywhere and I knew that it was getting old. She didn't like waiting for me to finish with the farm before driving her to work or see Sia. I just wanted her to be safe, but she wanted to live her life as normal. I had been keeping my mouth shut letting her be herself even if it made me worry. I think talking about her safety made her feel scared and anxious about everything.
"You cannot call him daffodil," I said, rolling my eyes. Grace and Elisa had named most of the cows. Even though I generally knew them as numbers I was starting to learn their names.
"But he is so pretty," she said hugging the bull's head. I shook my head trying not to laugh but was startled when I heard.
"Hunter!" it was Logan. I turned with a half-smile. Now I'm in trouble "What is she doing? Why did you let her in there? You do realise that she is pregnant? What is going on?" his voice was hostile as he came running towards me. Yelling and growling like he was about to shift. This was unlike him; he would normally approach calmly. This was mostly because my bear was a nutcase. Mellick would take the action as a sign of aggression. But these days my bear was a lot calmer, he just lifted his head, saw it was Logan and went back to sleep. My brothers were getting used to this calmer and friendly bear.
"If she doesn't listen to you, she isn't going to listen to me," I said. He glared at me as he jumped the fence with one hand. Grace had her hands up, trying to stop Logan from doing what he always did when he found her in a situation that bothered him. He scooped her up and carried her out of there.
"I told you to stay out of the bullpen, it's dangerous," Logan said his voice different. Calm, compassionate, and loving. Like he wasn't just yelling his face off two seconds ago. Grace rolled her eyes, sighing loudly, and trying to push away from him like a cat that didn't like hugs.
