I probably shouldn't have been dancing while cooking. The last time I did that I forgot about the meal, and we were eating mushy pasta. But I was celebrating. Not only had we just moved to the most beautiful place in the world, but I got a job at the local disability and age care centre, as a social worker. I thought it would take longer to get a job after moving down here. But turns out, that not a lot of people move to shifter town. So, most places are always looking for workers. The house smelt like pecan pie since it was cooling on the counter. My first ever knitted baby jumper was hanging over the back of a chair and I was the best. I was seriously the best person ever. Sia was giving me an odd look as I filled the pasta pot with water.
"Could you stop dancing?" Sia asked. I frowned at her, turned, and twerked in her face.
"You can't stop the music Sia; you can't stop the music," I said to her slapping my own butt. I suppose the odd thing about this was that no music was playing. I had asked her to put something on and while she was deciding I started dancing. You didn't need music to feel the rhythm.
"Why do I live with you?" Sia asked walking out of the room, trying to hide a smile. Sia had a great smile, she was cherry blond and curvy. What I really admired about he was her assertiveness and confidence. Nothing ever seemed to make her doubt herself, she always knew what she was doing was right. Well, that was how it looked. Even when complete strangers said terrible things to her it just seemed to wash over her. I didn't know how she did it, but her confidence always gave me strength.
"Because we are both poor!" I yelled back at her putting the pot on the stove.
"Oh, by the way, I saw Hunter outside of work today," Sia said coming back into the kitchen,
"Really! What is he like?" I asked. This would be the first time we met Hunter. This was his welcome home dinner after being away for so long. Hunter was my sister's, Grace's brother-in-law. She had mated with Hunter's brother, Logan, the Silver Thread Valleys deputy sheriff last year after Mum dumped us down here.
"He was having some bear issues. I remember Logan saying that Hunter always had the crazy bear. Oh, be warned, he is all charm and flirt," she said shutting the cutlery drawer with her hip. I do remember some passing remarks about Hunter's bear being the crazy one of the family.
"Game on, Buddy," I said scowling at nothing and fist pumping the air. Not that I had any experience when it came to charm or flirting but I would try my best. Sia and I had only been living here for a month. We had both moved from Medford to Silver Thread Valley, named for its shining creeks that threaded through the town. Grace had decided to stay down here after she mated with Logan. Sia and I didn't want to live so far away from her, so we decided to move. Silver Thread Valley was such a beautiful space who wouldn't want to live here? Surrounded by lust green forests and waterfall, that blanketed the Mountain rangers. I suppose the only real issue people might have moving here, is the large shifter population. It was the largest in the country and some people found them scary. Honestly, I just loved looking at all the massive, muscular, sexy men that walked around town. I loved ogling them, checking them out and undressing them with my eyes. It was fantastic, but some people thought it was scary. I felt that most shifters didn't really care about women, they were all looking for their mates. And since no shifter had shown any interest in me, I could continue using them all as eye candy.
"Do you think Grace would want garlic bread?" I asked Sia, my cousin. Maybe my cousin. We had both learnt a few months ago that Sia might not be related to us. The truth was that Grace had found her with Mum all those years ago. We were all unsure if she was our cousin or sister. But she had been with me for as long as I could remember. She will always be my cousin, sister, and partner in crime. She had recently graduated from accounting and started at a local firm. She seemed to enjoy the job and would also have good things to say. But sometimes I think she was a little sad about the place and I never knew why.
