Over the next few weeks, I stayed with Jules as much as Alby permitted me to. She had massively improved, although was still too weak to do a lot and was beginning to get stir crazy laying in my room day after day.

"Gally, I'm so bored," she complained, throwing her head back onto the pillow. "When can I actually do something?"

"Hey, take this up with Clint and Jeff, not me."

She narrowed her eyes at me. "No fair. I can't go to them and you know it." She was allowed to walk around a bit, but not enough she could go to the Medshack and back to give the two poor Medjacks a piece of her mind.

Neither of us had mentioned what happened to her. She didn't seem to want to talk about it and I didn't want to ask her about it in case it upset her or brought back the memories. She seemed alright, though.

"I'm tired of you tiptoeing around me," she suddenly said. "I know you want to know about what happened." Okay, apparently we were going to talk about the attack.

"Only if you're comfortable with telling me."

"I'd rather get this over and done with." She took a steadying breath before starting. She explained how she had gone to get some vines when she ran into Derek. Clearly, he decided he had waited long enough to get his vengeance.

It broke my heart to hear what had happened, and especially since I knew all of this could have been avoided if I never backed out of our deal. This was all my fault.

Maybe that was why I felt like I needed to stay with her through all of this despite her being my sworn enemy.

However, she did suddenly appear to be a lot more bearable and suddenly, she wasn't so insufferable. She wasn't so annoying and relentless. I think even a small part of me enjoyed her company.

This world was weird as shuck.

"I mean, he could've at least been creative about it," she said. "Beating me up? That's been done a million times before."

"He had a knife, Jules," I gently reminded her.

"Yes, I know. But it barely pierced my skin. I was lucky."

Although she was brushing off what had happened to her, it still tore my heart into shreds that she had to go through this. And I could now see in her eyes this was affecting her more than she was letting on.

"I guess it could have gone a lot worse," I spoke. I knew she needed me to act like it wasn't that bad. It was how she was choosing to cope with the whole ordeal and if this was what she thought she needed, it was what I would do.

"Hey, the new Greenie is coming tomorrow, right?" she asked, fully changing the topic.

"Yeah. Why?"

"I wanna go to it. I reckon I've rested enough by now."

"Okay."

She looked at me, shocked. She clearly didn't expect me to allow her to.

"What? I can see that you're becoming restless. It'll be good for you."

"Yeah. True." Her face suddenly fell. "Actually, never mind. I'll stay here."

"Jules." I gave her hand a quick squeeze. "If it's Derek you're worried about, he's in the Pit. Alby and Newt suspected it was him who did that to you but haven't done anything more since they don't yet have confirmation."
