Kids were meant to grow up. They're meant to become adults and make their mark on the world. That's not what happened to Beomgyu Choi. He was one of the unlucky few children who succumbed to childhood cancer. His parents just thought he had the flu. They kept him home but noticed he wasn't getting better after a week. He needed a new liver. He failed to get one in time.
The 12 year old fell into a coma. His parents were told he wasn't ever likely to wake up. They kept him alive as long as possible but the medical bills were starting to get overwhelming. The doctor still gave them the same grim odds. It was time to let go.
Death came quickly. He died peacefully as the plug on his life support was pulled. Beomgyu knew he was dead. He watched his parents cry over his body. It broke his heart. All he wanted to do was tell them he wasn't in pain anymore.
After a while, he found himself in a field of grass. The sky was blue. There wasn't a single cloud in sight. The sun was white and impossibly bright but somehow wasn't blinding. A large breeze swept through his hair. Then a boy appeared. He had fluffy brown hair. His face looked like the definition of purity. He offered his hand.
Beomgyu didn't understand what was going on. "Are you my guardian angel?"
"No. I'm here to walk you to eternity."
Beomgyu took his hand and they began to walk. All he saw was an endless field of green. He felt at peace next to the boy. "What's your name?"
The boy smiled. It was impossible not to feel safe within it. "Hyuka."
"I'm Beomgyu."
The boy laughed. "I know. It's kind of my job to know everyone who comes here."
Beomgyu squeezed the boy's hands harder. He loved the way it felt. "And your job is to walk me towards eternity?"
"Just until you decide. I'll explain who I am first." Hyuka stopped walking. He turned to face Beomgyu then held both of his hands in his own. He couldn't stop smiling looking at the boy in front of him. "I'm the son of the grim reaper. He walks the adults to their destiny. I walk the kids."
"I thought the grim reaper was supposed to be scary. You don't look scary at all."
"My dad isn't scary. People just don't like the idea of being dead. I think everyone deserves someone to walk with or else it gets really lonely. Don't you?"
"I guess. So you don't have a scythe?"
"Only for the bad kids who try to hurt me. You weren't a bad kid though. That's why you have a choice on what you want to do next. And I'm here to help you through it!"
For some unknown reason, Beomgyu went to hug him. He felt so euphoric in the boy's arms. He knew everything was going to be okay as he held him.
Hyuka giggled. "I can't say I had anyone hug me first before. Usually I have to hug them."
Beomgyu pulled away, still holding his hands. "What do people usually do?"
"Run away from me. I'm thankful I didn't have to chase after you."
"I guess I didn't feel the need to. You seem harmless."
Hyuka jumped up and down with excitement when he heard that. He calmed down then smiled some more. "I'm harmless because you are. I'm sorry you're here. You didn't deserve this."
"Thanks... so you said I have choices?"
"Right! You can choose to start over if you want. Be born again. Have another chance to live. I can't guarantee it'll be better than your old life but the odds are, it'll at least be a lot longer."
