"Baby stop scratching them! Hold on, I'll grab more lotion."
Kai's hands were killing him as the burns were starting to heal. He wanted to scratch them the fuck off. If he had no skin, this giant itch-fest would end. You might as well have stuck 100 mosquitos onto his wounds when they were fresh. It was the same feeling. "The lotion doesn't help!"
"Because you scratch it off before it can set!" Yeonjun gently took his wrists. He twisted them upwards so Kai's palms were exposed. His hands didn't look nearly as bad as before but they were still unpleasant to look at. The peeling was particularly gross. He squeezed a decent amount into the center of his palms then gently rubbed them in.
"Please press harder."
Yeonjun rolled his eyes as he rubbed the cream harder into his skin. "Better?"
"So... fucking... itchy..."
"I know." Yeonjun took a roll of bandages then tightly wrapped the blonde's hands. He kissed his forehead next. "You're doing great honey."
Kai stopped focusing on his hands when he saw Yeonjun's expression turn sad. The redhead sulked. "It's my fault."
"Hey..." Kai kept searching his husband's face until he saw those beautiful black pearls look back at him. "I would've put my hands in the fire a million times over for you. I don't regret anything."
"Still." Yeonjun put the lotion and the bandages back into his backpack. He looked up towards the ceiling of the vault when they heard footsteps nearby. He put his finger to his lips. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Kai wished the cameras were functional. Then they could've seen if the person outside was friendly or an enemy.
The footsteps were slow and heavy. Their eyes followed the sound as it walked over the ceiling. Combat boots. The couple realized it had to be the commander Beomgyu from the shelter.
Yeonjun carefully slipped the gun out of his backpack. He was ready to defend them if it came down to it.
The footsteps stopped over their heads. The couple looked up and held their breath. An onslaught of gunshots came firing into the ceiling. Kai ran towards their shelf in the vault. He fumbled with the key to open it. Inside is that they came there for. His hands hurt so much. The key didn't seem to want to go in.
Yeonjun went towards the cash room to collect as much as he could. Millions were being shoved into his backpack. Once he couldn't fit anymore, he grabbed a box of matches to light the rest on fire.
Kai finally opened the shelf. He grabbed their fake IDs, their alternate black cards and their backup guns. He looked at Yeonjun to see the redhead lighting the match.
Yeonjun turned around with the flame in his hand. "Ready to run?"
"Do it."
They ran the second the flame hit the first stack of bills. Now if the revolution wanted their wealth, they could only get what was left in the shelves. A mere fraction of the jackpot they were looking for.
Yeonjun grabbed Kai's wrist so they would run faster. The flames kissed the soles of their shoes as they made their way up the stairs. A cloud of smoke escaped with them.
Beomgyu backed away when he felt heat rise from his feet. He ran assuming the fire was going to set off a bomb. When he ducked behind a rock, he saw a patch of vibrant blonde hair through the smoke. "KAI!"
The couple turned around to see Beomgyu running towards his bike. They ran faster towards the small airstrip nearby. It was only a mile away but it felt like a lifetime.
Kai looked up to see the moon and the sun on opposite sides of the horizon. They ran towards the moon. The crimson sky began to ombre into a deep blue. Thick black clouds were rolling in. It only rained an average of three times a year in the desert. Today seemed to be one of those times. Rain was usually a celebration given how rare it was. Right now, it seemed like a curse. Rain was going to make it harder to fly and since Kai's hands were still recovering, Yeonjun was going to struggle worse with it.
Beomgyu realized where they were headed. He hopped onto his bike and sped like hell towards them.
Lightning shot through the clouds. Rain started falling in a downpour as darkness overtook the sun and moon. The wet sand was making it more difficult to run through. Even worse to drive through as Beomgyu's tires kept falling in the sinking puddles.
Yeonjun yelled "WE'RE SO CLOSE!"
Flowers began sprouting after months of being dormant. Lightning made them shine. The desert was become a meadow as thunder boomed across the valley. Budding flowers got squished as the couple ran through the tarmac. Yeonjun quickly entered the code to their garage. "Come on! Open faster!"
They could hear the roar of Beomgyu's dirt bike in the distance. It grew louder as he drew near.
When the garage door opened up two feet, the couple ducked under then climbed into the little plane. Their bags were thrown into back seats. Kai frantically put his headset on then instructed Yeonjun on starting the plane. He was calm despite his husband panicking.
Yeonjun's nerves got worse when the garage door fully opened to reveal Beomgyu just over the valley. Kai kept talking to him. He looked at his husband then started to only focus on everything he was saying. The plane engine roared to life. He peddled like hell out of the garage towards the landing strip. Once they were lined up on the runway, Kai directed him for takeoff.
Bullets were being shot at the plane. Kai looked over to see Beomgyu seconds away from colliding his bike into them. "BABY GO!"
The plane moved forward. It didn't seem to gain speed fast enough as Beomgyu raced along side them. Kai saw the barrel of a gun directed at his face. He took the yolk then jerked it to the side. The bullet went into the door instead.
Beomgyu saw the end of the runway drawing near. He leaped off of his bike to grab onto the tip of the wing.
Kai looked down to see him dangling off of the edge. Their ascent into the clouds began. The rain whipped past their windshield. The higher they rose, the darker the sky became. Kai looked over to see Beomgyu no longer on the edge of the plane. His relief was cut short when Yeonjun started freaking out from low visibility. "Baby it's okay! You see these half moon things? That's what's going to get us to the capitol. You don't need to see out there. I bought this plane for it's IFR rating for a reason."
"WHAT THE HELL DOES IFR MEAN?!" All Yeonjun could focus on was the endless gray clouds in front of him. Their plane continued to rise. He wanted to be out of the storm as soon as possible.
Kai grabbed his husband's thigh for comfort. "It means it can see for you. All you need to do is look at the instruments and follow my directions." Once they were away from most of the storm, Kai looked down to see a transformed earth. Shades of pinks, yellows and reds made the pale sand bloom with life. It was beautiful. He nudged his husband to then pointed out of his window.
Yeonjun was mesmerized. He never got sick of seeing this. When this was all over, he wanted to live somewhere surrounded by greenery and water. It was easier to move now that they didn't have a home. He was so lost in the view, he let the yolk slip. The plane made a hard bank towards the left. He was worried until he heard his husband laughing at him. The plane returned to horizontal as he smiled back.
Kai noted "we're going to need to stop for fuel before we make it to the capitol. I think there's a small motel there too if I remember correctly."
"I can't wait until this is over."
"Me too."
Kai unconsciously squeezed Yeonjun's thigh as he watched a flowering meadow fade back into desert sand.
Beomgyu sat on his bike while looking at his phone. He put a tracker on the underside of the wing. The map zoomed out as he began to search for places they were headed towards. That's when he saw the fuel station. He started to drive straight towards it, praying they were going to stop there for the night. If they weren't, he was a dead man. If they were, his redemption was secured.
