Soobin was in the recording booth for an animated movie he was starring in.
Kai was waiting patiently in the corner of the booth. He was asked to come for observation even though he had no clue what was going on. Watching the little animated Soobin go through an alien world was so cool. He got to meet a few of the fellow costars too. Kai didn't know it but Soobin was actually trying to get him in the movie.
The actor had been working tirelessly to help his ex restore his career. Part of why he did it was because Kai deserved it. His reputation was destroyed on a lie so it was only right to help him get it back.
The other part of his motivation came from wanting Kai back. He was waiting for Yeonjun to fuck up. Soobin couldn't believe that Kai took him back after what happened. In his eyes, Yeonjun was a terrible person. That was certainly true of his past. Everyone in his vast circle heard the entitled attitude that previously spewed out of his mouth. He refused to believe he changed like his ex claimed he did. Why try to change someone when he himself, was already the type of person that Kai wanted? Soobin's mistake was letting him go.
Admittedly, Kai was starting to get bored in the little booth. It was fascinating for the first half hour but then he felt awkward for sitting there and doing nothing. To his surprise, Soobin asked him to step into the microphone. He was just a model. Not an actor. He was given a small tutorial of the cues on the screen in front of him. Then he was handed a highlighted script. The role was for an alien looking penguin that ends up befriending Soobin's character. He nervously began to read some lines when the director told him to.
Soobin stood on the side to help him. He complimented everything Kai did well and helped with things he could do better on. After 20 minutes, he watched his ex do it on his own.
Kai thought it was fun. He was starting to get the hang of it. The director praised him a lot. After another hour, he was offered the role. He excitedly accepted.
Once the contract was signed, they had to leave for a photo shoot. Both were ambassadors for Prada. Soobin usually got the more professional atire. Kai got the avant garde stuff. Because of this, it was rare they did shoots together. Today was a cologne commercial and a billboard campaign. The theme was posh street wear. The cologne name was "notice". It smelled like a citrus farm in the rain.
Since the idea was to be noticed, hence the name, their shoot was on a closed off street in Times Square. The two posed by timeless buildings. Onlookers unknowingly sold the concept of the shoot. Soobin couldn't help but stare in awe when Kai was solo modeling on fifth avenue. It was no wonder he was amongst the highest paid male models in the world.
When it was Soobin's turn, Kai helped him with different expressions to try. He thought his ex made it all look so effortless. Soobin radiated confidence once he started feeling himself in the shoot. Kai loved all of his pictures. The video was even better.
After five hours, they were done for the day. It was pretty late at night. To Soobin's surprise, Kai asked him if he wanted to grab a bite to eat. He happily accepted while wondering where Yeonjun was. Kai usually went straight home to him. They are dating after all. Soobin began to grin at the thought of Yeonjun fucking up. Maybe this was his chance.
They went to a nearby gastro pub. Ridiculously unhealthy food was all they ordered. Neither had eaten all day because of the Prada shoot earlier.
Soobin requested a private table. Last time he didn't, fans lined up for his autograph while he was just trying to eat. The food went uneaten because his gentlemen image needed to be protected. He signed every autograph until his manager came to bail him out. That wasn't going to happen today. Especially not when he had Kai to himself.
Their table was in the very back corner. A place no one looked in unless you worked there. Kai pulled Soobin's chair out for him then sat in his own. A message appeared on his phone. Yeonjun was wondering where he was.
Soobin glanced over to see it was an apology message. He was right. Yeonjun did mess up. This was his chance to take his ex back. He forced the smile off of his face then asked "is everything okay?"
Kai shrugged. He didn't want to get into it. "We just had a fight over something stupid."
"Like what? You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to. I just was curious."
"Really, it's nothing."
Soobin changed the subject to music that was coming out soon. The two had very similar tastes in music. They were actually very similiar in everything. He kept talking about concerts that were coming up so the smile would return to the blonde.
A month ago, Yeonjun and Soobin sat down at a restaurant to have a long conversation. Kai and Yeonjun weren't dating yet. Soobin wanted to be clear that he was going after him and that he was better for Kai than Yeonjun ever would be. The discussion for the most part remained civil. Both agreed they messed up in their relationships with Kai. Both agreed to not sabotage the other, which is something Soobin regretted agreeing to, and both agreed to remain respectful for Kai's sake.
What Soobin didn't expect was for Kai and Yeonjun to start dating the next day. He thought he had more time. He tried dating other people in an effort to move on, but he couldn't. Kai was the most unique person he had ever met. A true one in a million.
Kai was unaware of that conversation. However, he was aware of the one Yeonjun and Soobin had two weeks ago. He found out by accident. His sisters were having lunch a few tables away and overheard everything.
Yeonjun was upset with how much time his boyfriend and Soobin had been spending together. He called that sabotage which was against their deal.
Soobin claimed he was just fixing the damage Yeonjun inflicted on Kai. He had leverage. Kai's career was being rebuilt because of him. If Yeonjun requested he stop, then that would hurt his boyfriend more than himself. Soobin had the upperhand and happily abused it.
Kai would've had no idea they hated each other if it wasn't for his sisters. They disguised it very well.
The argument Kai had with Yeonjun was him confessing he knew. His boyfriend wanted him to stop seeing Soobin. The blonde understood why. Anyone would. That wasn't something he was going to do though because Soobin was actively helping his career. Besides that, he considered him his best friend. Nothing romantic would happen between them.
Their argument ended in frustration. Kai asked if he trusted him. He got a "yes but-" as a response. Kai took that to mean he didn't. Their relationship would never work without trust and right now, that was in doubt.
Soobin paid for the meal. He then called a cab. It was a long drive back to Kai's condo. He looked over to see the blonde's head pressed against the window. Those amber eyes stared onto the street. The city lights glimmered in his irises. Soobin tried not to but he couldn't help but stare. He was in love. It hurt to look down at a hand he couldn't hold.
Kai turned his head to glance at Soobin. He wasn't looking at the street lights. He was looking at the reflection of the window. He saw the way Soobin looked at him. Full of love with a hint of pain. Kai began to wonder if he was with the wrong person. Him and Soobin never argued. At least not seriously. Soobin never broke his trust or sabotaged his career. He continued to lock gazes with his best friend while his mind wondered.
Soobin's heart raced when he saw the way Kai was looking at him. He quietly asked "what are you thinking about?" There wasn't a response back. Kai was looking at his lips. His eyes fell to his hand before looking back towards the window. Soobin took a chance. He gently placed his hand on top of his.
Kai didn't show it but he was torn inside. He had no idea what he wanted. Before, Soobin broke up with him out of nowhere. Did he really want to take that chance again? His hand didn't move as his best friend interlocked their fingers. His eyes continued to look at Soobin in the reflection.
The street he lived on came into view. He saw Yeonjun sitting on the step outside. His eyes were red and puffy. It looked like he had been crying. Kai glanced at his phone. He forgot it was on silent. There was three missed calls and five missed messages from his boyfriend. He felt terrible for accidentally ignoring him. Their eyes met when he rolled down the window. In that instant, Kai knew who he wanted to be with.
