Gangnam isn't a place that people live in for fun. They live here for the schools and the reputation. If a student is sad, it's ok, because at least they're in Gangnam. If your child is good at studying, you're wasting their potential if they aren't sent to Gangnam. If your child is an athlete, they don't need to be in Gangnam, but hell, still send them there too.

Even if your child is talentless, send them to Gangnam, because at least they'll be worthless in a worthwhile place.
That's Gangnam. A place where parents are expected to send their children. Even if you can't see your child at home, at least they're studying well. That's all that truly matters.

I am the child.

I am in Gangnam.

And I am miserable.

Yes, I'm grateful my parents work so hard for me to live here. And yes, they have set me ahead with my studies. But my academic achievements don't really matter if I give up and choose to work in a café for the rest of my life.
So maybe I sound spoiled. I'm a rich kid whining about my parents sacrifices. But I honestly would rather live somewhere else, with no worries in the world.

I've lived in Gangnam since I started school- not high school, but elementary school. I've gone to the same place all these years as well. Everybody knows everybody, it's that type of school. It's small and prestigious, and it has its cliques like every other high school.
There's the popular kids, then athletes, the crazy rich ones, and then me. I'm a quiet kid, my friends and I are irrelevant. We don't matter in the school social hierarchy.

Let me give you a rundown of the hierarchy.

Up at the top is Jeong Jaehyun. He's captain of the soccer team, if that means anything to you. People really like him, no, they love him. Everyone thinks he's an attractive hunk, who also happens to be tolerable. Basically put, he's not evil.

Right below him is all his friends. Most of them are on the soccer team, but if not, their on some sport team. I don't really know them all, but I think their names are Jungwoo, Yuta, WinWin, Johnny, and Taeyong. They're super popular as well, it's just that nobody can top Jaehyun.

Right below Jaehyun's friends are even more of his friends!
Are you noticing a trend in this list?
These guys don't really play sports, but they're in clubs and whatnot. Doyoung, Sungchan, and Xiaojun. They're popular, but to me, they aren't that special.

Then below them, even more of Jaehyun's friends! Shocking, right?
Mark and Haechan.
Honestly, I don't know how and why they're friends with Jaehyun, but they are. They're also second years, unlike everybody else in this hierarchy. I still have no clue how second years made it into a third year social hierarchy, but they pulled it off. They aren't really in clubs or anything, they're just smart. I don't really know, but I'm pretty sure they're friends with the smart kids in 11th grade. Like obviously they're friends with Jaehyun, but I think their actual friends are those 11th graders who manage to outscore the 12th graders.

Then there's some other people. Honestly, I don't really know them, and I don't really care about them. Granted, I don't care about most people in my school, I just happen to know who some of them are.

And then the bottom of the social hierarchy. The nerds, brainiacs, losers. These people have nothing special going on, they just aren't interesting. All they do is study. They're too quiet to talk to, and too shy to befriend. So who on Earth is in this class? Simple.

Kim Nari.

'Who is Kim Nari?' you may ask.
She's me.
I am Kim Nari. I am not worth the popular kids time, and honestly, I have no problem with that. I guess I'm not the only one stuck at the bottom. My friends are too, I guess us losers have to join forces. I'm friends with Shin Ryujin, Lee Heesung, Huh Yunjin, and Choi Soobin.

Now, I know this all sounds super cliché. The smart kid whining about being smart. Oh no! She's smart but unpopular. Boo hoo!
But trust me, it isn't meant to sound like that. I guess I'm just salty. See, I wasn't born in Korea. Sure I'm a citizen, if that matters, but I was born in the U.S. I lived there until 3rd grade, and I loved it. People there were easy going, granted they were all like, eight. I go back to America most summers for extra classes. I go to the same classes every time, so I have some close friends back in America.

So sure, I sound whiney, but maybe I am. I just wish my parents would move to the U.S.
Like- it would cost them less if anything.
Regardless of my complaints, that's not going to happen. So in the meantime I have to suck it up and stay here in Gangnam.

Anyways, back to the whole social thingy. I was having a wonderful time at the bottom. No disruptions, no drama, just good grades, my friends, and peace. That was until somebody decided to turn everything upside down. And that somebody happens to be a person we already know!

Come on!
Guess with me!

...

Hmmmm... did you guess Jeong Jaehyun by chance?

Because that'll be a pretty close answer!

Actually- that's it.
That is the answer.

The same guy who has everybody's attention.
The same guy who is untouchable.

The same guy who had no business talking to me.

Jeong Jaehyun
