If you were to ask anyone in Hawkins, what they thought about the Harrington family then you'd get a wide range of opinions. If you mentioned that family name to anyone then they would know exactly who they were and they could probably name a handful of them.

To put it into perspective, the Harrington family was considered royalty in the small town. Everyone knew who they were, even if you've never interacted with them. They were like the model family in Hawkins, everyone wanted to be them or just like them.

Each one of their family members had gone on to be great things for their town or even for their country. The family consisted of many successful politicians, doctors, scientists, engineers, teachers and even rich business owners. Everyone inspired to be just like them.

Though many of the Harrington members were well known around the town, their popularity didn't blow up until the Second World War. They were practically propelled to fame, thanks to the brilliant brother duo, George and Edward Harrington.

The brothers were the first ones in the family to achieve great things for their country. Both males had left their hometown in the late 20's to explore the scientific realm (something unknown to most Hawkins citizens). George taking up chemistry and Edward being a quantum physicist.

Their extreme intelligence and observation skills in those two scientific fields, had prompted them to be recruited by the American government during the war. They were considered national heroes due to their involvement in the Manhattan Project.

Both males had helped to figure out the atomic bomb, an item that would later be dropped on Japan and prompted the end of the Pacific War. And for their contributions, they were majorly rewarded. This meant awards, money, land, successful jobs and more. They even became the most famous people in Hawkins, due to their work.

But despite all of those rewards that came about after the war, the Harrington family became plagued with some horrible misfortune.

If you know anything about the atomic bomb then you would know all of the devastating health issues that could occur. Many of these scientists were working in awful environments and were exposed to many dangerous things, so that definitely had a major impact on them.

And George and Edward Harrington were not immune to those devastating health issues.

Of course, they had become sick later on in their aging lives and ended up dying in painful ways, due to their involvement in the creation in the atomic bomb. But the effects that it had on their offspring was much worse.
